My Goal - 5'9 to 6'0 and Above
« on: March 11, 2019, 06:13:47 AM »

Hello LL community,

I finally found a community that understands the pain of feeling short most of their life.

For me it’s quite different, I was mostly the tall kid growing up from elementary all the way to the beginning of high school. What reinforced this belief is when my doctor showed my growth chart and she told me I was trending to hit 6’0, with a potential height of 6’1.

I would think my great trend in height is due to 3 things when I was a kid:
1. was playing outside a lot, soccer
2. my mom fed me well, including breakfast
3. Genetics, my dad is 5’9 1/2 (my dad side has a couple 6 footer nephews) and my mom is 5’6

I was optimistic and hopeful that I’ll be at least 6 feet tall.

I started to realize that I wasn’t getting any taller when in mid-high school, others grew taller than me.

I thought that I’d catch up. But that didn’t happen after I graduated high school.

I feel what contributed to missing my potential height is:

1. spending most of my high school days/summers/nights gaming - which I lacked sleep and didn’t eat routinely
2. I also stressed a lot from school, assignments, exams
3. My mom stopped serving breakfast, I skipped breakfast most of my high school years
4. I didn’t exercise routinely, however, I played street hockey in high school. I wanted to go beyond the street by playing ice hockey in high school, but ice hockey was not affordable at the time. My sister signed me up in basketball when I first entered high school because of my height. But I lacked interest in basketball. And I was stuck being on the computer most of my high school life.

When I was 21, I checked my plates with my doctor, and they have closed. And to this day, I remember my doctor reviewing my growth chart, it was like looking at a bad stock, it was trending up to 6’0 - 6’1 but it plummeted down to 5’9.

Forever.

And it’s hard to accept that I’m standing at 5’9 1/2, and I’ve been this height, and now 30 years old.

When people ask me how tall I am, I tell them I’m 5’10 and they don't second guess it.

I always wanted to be taller than my dad, and my dad wanted me to be taller than him.

Also, my mother, whenever she remembers meeting my dad for the first time, she emphasized how tall and handsome he was.

And I’m also hearing from people when I grew up, telling me “you’re pretty tall”. Now I don’t hear this anymore.

What stuck with me was this internal fixation of being taller, because I was becoming or expecting to become 6 feet tall.

I’m athletically built and competitive. But I didn’t grow up or surround myself with athletes.

However, over time, I started admiring how athletes think, look, and work (especially swimmers during the 2008 Bejing Olympics), and 98% of them are 6 feet and above. I too want to become just like them down to the height.

I don’t feel like I feel or look like an athlete.

I sometimes look at myself in the mirror and tiptoe to see how a few inches makes me feel better and fulfilled on how I could have been if I have taken myself better in my high school/college years.

Environment is key to becoming taller, and I had the genetics to do it. But I wasted that opportunity.

Now I work at a business office and train at a boxing gym. And a couple of my office mates and gym partners are 6 footers, well built, well-dressed gentleman, and it sucks that I have to look up to them when we talk. I feel a mixture of sadness and mild jealousy that I could have been just like them, I feel like a kid talking up to them instead of speaking eye to eye.

Especially for business. I feel business gets better when I’m 6’0 feet tall.

Looking back, I didn’t take care of myself, and I want a second chance in life to take care of my self physically, fulfil my potential height, and feel like my best self.

I have this obsession in reaching what my body is capable of, being a great athlete, and being my best self in this lifetime. Because we only live once.

I’m looking at the LL, and I can hit 3 inches via femurs making me 6’0 (expected height when I was growing).

And I can hit 2 inches via tibias, making me 6’1 to 6’2, which will hit my ideal and potential height.

Specifics:
Height: 5’9 1/2
Chest: 39 chest (broad shoulders)
Wingspan: 5’9 at 71.2"

The only concerns I have is:
1. proportions with my arms, since my wingspan is proportional to my height
2. movement for cardio (running, swimming, boxing)
3. I love Thai boxing, and we use our legs to strike opponents and vice versa

Past fracture experience with arm:
I had an arm fracture before, and I used to be strong gripping with my right hand. But after the fracture, it’s not as strong anymore. I’m curious how strong my femurs and tibias will be after 1-2 years of healing from post-op.

This thread will be my journey to getting LL and below is the goal to make it happen.

Right now, what is stopping me from doing this is money, so I’m saving up to make this happen. In the meantime, I’ll be training to be physically fit (sleep, nutrition, cardio) and saving money to do this operation.

This will take about 2 - 3 years, and you never know, I may change my mind, but for now, I'm set to do this.

Thanks for this interesting thread and your personal experience. I can fully understand you. I feel the same way
but I am 6'1 and still want to be taller.

You can save up money and do ll but this is a hard way to go.

Environment is not the key to becoming tall. Environment affects on average about 20% of your final height in developed countries, up to about 40% in developing countries, with genetics making up 60%-80% in developing and developed countries respectively. If you're in the US, with an average height of round about 5 foot 10, and you are 5'9 1/2'', it's very unlikely you missed out on more than 1 cm (0,4 inches) of your height potential, unless you were severely malnourished for many years straight. The idea that you were "destined to be 6 foot" is a pipe dream, at least following all the scientific knowledge about human growth that science has to offer.

With that being said, yes, you can do LL surgery, if you have the money, nobody can really stop you from doing that. With the current techniques of distraction osteogenesis that are available however, you will face a lot of risks ranging from being crippled to suffering chronic pain to developing early joint degeneration. This is a very risky, very serious procedure and you have to ask yourself if it's really, really worth it. Since you're 30 now and would be about 32-33 when doing it, your age would make for an additional risk since older patients generally don't recover as easily.

Agility is supposed to drop down drastically after LL
If Thai boxing is important for you, better to be aware of this risk

Rather be tall than boxing unless you earn your money with it.

Friend I am 169 in a South American country and I feel low, I am 21 years old, my mother is 166 and my father is 172cm, I think I should have measured more. My good points or the best is that I have a large wingspan of 177 cm with broad shoulders, my bad points are my just 85 cm tall sitting and my hands are 17 cm long and my feet are 25.5 cm long. My hands are practically women's, even so I have a good size. I would like to have his height and not think about submitting to an operation like this which is very dangerous and we will lose athletic skills almost certainly. Even so I understand why he lives in a developed country where the average height is better but if you can avoid the operation is much better, I do not know what you think

Interesting mix of replies...

I’ll be chatting with 5’8 - 5’9 who’ve gone through the LL

I’m interested in athletic individuals who are 2-3 years from post op

I’m curious in their performance, did it hinder or improve?

I’m also going to consider buying 3’ lifts and see how I feel when I’m at my fulfilled height

There are several members who've done 5'8-5'11" here with successful outcomes. Short2tall in particular, who had a successful outcome in the US. Your goals are very possible in this lifetime which is the good news. It can happen sooner rather than later if you focus on saving your money and worry less about wasting it when you're getting it.

I would recommend and HIGHLY advise staying in the US, going with Paley or Rozbruch. There are alot of potential sides and permanent things that can effect your mobility and overall athleticism and it seems Paley and Rozbruch can really minimize that risk in cosmetic patients (Especially if the patients follow the lengthening and PT advice) Dr. M is quite good as well as a runner up option.

Just continue to save and work for your money and you will get there sooner rather than later. Now with Stryde the process isn't as long anymore and you won't have to wait the full year that many on here did before you. You're living in a good time for someone pursuing LL which is great.

I'd say just stay your regular height until you get the surgery. Lifts are bad for ankles, tibias and your spine and will even ruin your posture overtime plus they're not permanent and you have to constantly think about your height in public with them on and you constantly have to worry about being found out by other people. It's just simply not worth it health-wise and socially. Plus it will be MUCH BETTER when you finally reach the height, and you've never been there before :)

Best of luck on your journey and hope that you reach all of your goals and live a happy life man

@OP: Jesus Christ, just use lifts, or elevator shoes if lifts are uncomfortable for you. Why are we encouraging megalomaniacs to butch their savings and legs at perfectly fine heights, but who, yet, still feel the need to be taller than most guys in the streets? His goal is not even 5'11.5, but two surgeries, and becoming 6ft2.

Yes I do want to add, before doing this surgery, ask yourself if you have optimized your life to the fullest extent possible (job/career, personality, etc).
