Just a general curiosity question for the community.  For those of you who really want to pursue the CLL journey, what is preventing you right now from going forward with the surgery / procedure?

Fear of chronic pain and disability, lack of opportunity of meeting real patients who get this done (due to privacy reasons), many diaries being unreliable without proof while strongly recommending the doctor, many doctors advising against this (even though some "market" it unethically).

Financial. I currently only have $500 saved, but I am moving back in with my parents tomorrow to save almost all of my paycheck each week and make this finally happen :)

They are not rich, so cannot help me directly financially (though I wouldn't expect them too), but are very supportive. So they are helping me in this way to make my dream happen :)

Congratulations by the way, for being able to do this with the Stryde system and almost hitting 1cm :) Your diary is inspirational and I love reading the updates.

Pain for life.
Not being able to return to doing certain activities like now.
Costs of good doctors.
Without guarantees.
Loss of mobility range.

I could mention something else maybe...

May I ask what else? I am also trying to think of all the negatives, to make the most informed decision possible.

Of course, no problem!

Lost of extremity.
Death.
Pains with temperature changes.

You really have a lot of things going through your mind.

The fear of waking up in the middle of the night in a hospital bed, in a foreign country. Covered in sticky sweat, being unable to walk, unable to sleep, unable to have your healthy limbs back, horrible pain violating your body. The darkest thoughts imaginable overcoming you. Being unable to generate the slightest positive thought, feeling absolutely wretched with every moment of your being, feeling alone and hopeless. Longing for the pivotal concept of someone hugging and embracing you until your pain and desperation go away, while being distinctly aware that there is no going back and you gave your consent for a long trip in living hell.

You got me. CLL is a shady business. All people involved display a strong lack of ethics and mild or extreme forms of psycopathy. When you sell your soul to them it's over. Your life won't be the same again.

Hi Guys,

I went ahead and summarized the reasons below from the previous posts.  Any other reasons?

-Financial Burden - How to pay for it?
-Finding the time to take time off from job/career
-Fear of Chronic Pain
-Fear of Disability
-Lack of Proven Case Studies (Other patients)
-Fear of not being able to return to previous life activities
-No guarantee that things will go as planned and as hoped for
-Loss of extremity
-Death
-Pain that comes with temperature changes
-Loneliness
-Remorse / Regret
-Depression
-Journey Fatigue
-Uncertainty regarding Doctor Ethics

Damn!!     "All people" who ?!!    I had surgery 1/18/18,   now exactly one year later, could not be happier.  Went from 5'6.25" to 5'9.25.

A tough 6 months for sure. Nothing life threatening,  just tough.   Life is now fully back to normal.   Waiting to have my rods removed.

My doctor was awesome.        No shady business or lack of ethics from anyone!!

Are there shady doctors? I am sure there are.  But not just in CLL. There are shady people in just about any field we can think of.

Where do you pull this crap from?   most of the recent people who post here and give opinions haven't had any first hand experience but talk like they have. You make it difficult  for others who come here to look for helpful information. It causes people to potentially shy away from a procedure which could change their lives for the better.

Think before you post.

agreed. I wish we can have a subsection where people who haven't had the surgery  (like me) can't post. But then it requires a way of validating proof of real patients to remove fake ones.

I'm giving it two years before I make a decision on externals/internals. Doing it any earlier than that could be a cause of immense regret later.

Yes I do want to add, before doing this surgery, ask yourself if you have optimized your life to the fullest extent possible (job/career, personality, etc).

LAGrowin, perhaps you're right not 'all people' are shady but the people I met chez Monegal were shady (doctor, fake PT and others). Other patients with bad experiences share my view about their doctors (Unicorn, Hanshi).

Hi Cr7.  I think you may have misunderstood.  LAGrowin had a great outcome and achieved nearly 3 inches of height and normal walking ability in 6 months w/ Dr. Mahboubian of North Hollywood, California in USA.

Hello infullstryde, I think that Lagrowin had a good outcome, I followed his diary and am following yours too.
However I said to elaborate in response to myloginacc's post who said "he is an LL vet who had a bad outcome. Don't attack him".
I hope that your pain management keeps on getting better.
Remember all this pain will go away but the height you will gain will remain with you. Godspeed brother.

notatroll,

My apologies if I came accross harsh.   I am sorry that you did not have a positive outcome and that you had to experience 'shady' characters in your journey.  It is truly unfortunate,  as we all dive into this hoping to positively change our lives.   It is no joke.

As I hit the one year mark post-op jut a few days ago, I reflected on all that I went through,  the pains,  the fears, the doubts, sleepless nights.  I was blessed to be up and waking within 6 months and at 3" taller.   It is all behind you before you know it.  Would hope that everyone would have that experience without having to watch their back.

I think all American doctor patients I have interacted with (Paley, Rozbruch, Mahboubian), have all done well.  Unfortunately not everyone can afford them and so they look to other less expensive options in other parts of the world, and this is where we have to be careful.

We cannot generalize however.  I was treated with the utmost professionalism without a hint of 'shady' by Dr. Mahboubian.     I would do it all again.  It was life changing!

Best to you.

Leave your job and get the visa again. Depending on where you are from, getting a green card can take forever, so it's not like your situation regarding H1B will ever change (I don't know).

If the surgery is not that important to you and you can live without doing it, then go and enjoy life!

LL is more important to me than my current job , even though the possibility of getting equally high paying job later is low. Yes for me the GC will take 150 years (India). That is why I have decided to quit, do LL and try to find a job again that sponsors visa, if not I have taken Canada PR as back-up option (not as high paying as US but higher than India).

No worries. Perhaps there are indeed good doctors and Mahboubian is one of them.

My advice for everybody, when you visit your doctor for the first time trust your guts. I noticed my doctor and everything around him were shady from the beginning. His demeanour was scary (reckless, arrogant, lecherous). His true evil face only showed up with the bad cases like Cooper for example (threatening, blackmailing, name calling) Musicmaker (Stockholm syndrome) and other patients who are not in forum with very bad results (nerve damage, misalignment, non union, nail failure and others including the guy who killed himself). Guys and gals TRUST YOUR GUTS.
