Internal Femur Rod Removal
« on: August 16, 2018, 06:32:45 PM »

Just curious to hear stories/experiences for anyone who did internal femur LL (regardless of the nail used) and had their rods subsequently removed. How was the pain and how long was it before you were walking normally again with no pain? Working out/legs weights/running? I'm FINALLY getting my rods out in the fall, and just curious to know what it will be like. I'm not really nervous just more annoyed that I'll have another (hopefully, temporary) inconvenience in my life once again. But I imagine it'll be nothing like the first time around lol...

Dr. R claims I can go back to my heavy leg workouts in a month, which almost seems way too good to be true. But I definitely trust him. He's a world class surgeon. But I'll be conservative. Just hoping I don't lose too much leg muscle, I can't imagine that I will so I won't be immobile like when I had the first surgery...

If you're worried there is no harm in putting off heavy leg workouts for a few months after that and focus on improving the strength of your healing bones through less intense exercise.

I mean, I challenged Dr. R on this a few times and told him what I lift, and he stood by his answer of 1 month. So I feel pretty confident. Maybe after a month I'll restart with just the bar lol just to start re-engaging the muscles and feeling the movement without the presence of the rods being there.

You should be mostly fine in a month and start working out in the gym. I was able to walk without a walker a day after surgery but legs felt really heavy and my endurance gradually returned. I was able to walk near 90% by the end of the first month, however slight waddling was still present. Abductors will most likely be affected the most. Psychologically I suffered way more during my nail removal compared to my lengthening days since I had something to look forward to when I was lengthening. Plus the acute pain associated with nail removal was far worse for me too. Now my legs feel much better than having the nails inside, however I would say that my athletic ability is no where I was before doing LL.

Hi Microbe - thank you very much for your honest feedback on this! I feel like there's not enough patient experiences on here with rod removal surgery and life immediately after said surgery.

The pain doesn't scare me too much. I got through it once, I can get through it again. I'm more mostly annoyed with having to avoid leg weight lifting for a month and getting scars again (my scars from the first surgery are pretty much gone). But I'll see how they look after like three months and then look into a plastic surgeon to improve them as much as possible (the ones near my butt- don't care about the ones on the thighs as much because the hair mostly covers them). Plus, I already had the screw on my left hip removed since it was causing pain, so on that side I should only have two incisions (I think), and there maybe less pain on that side?

Just wanna get this sh*t done!
