Humerus and leg lengthening combined?
« on: September 14, 2014, 06:54:46 PM »

Ok, so as I'm waiting for my femur and tibia to consolidate, I'm getting more and more worried about my arms looking too short for my new height (182cm) at 170cm wingspan. The thought of extra 6 months to lengthen them is killing me, I just can't waste any more time, I'm literally running insane! I'm scheduled to remove the leg fixators in 2 months and then I'll be getting one last, final surgery on my other femur and tibia. And I thought what if I combine it with humerus lengthening? The problem is that I'm supposed to use my arms to move around, because I can't use my legs fully, so I'm wondering should the humerus exfix be able to take the weight? I weight like 50kg though divide it by two and that's just 25 kg on every arm. If legs can take that, arms should be able too, right? What do you think, guys? No one has done this   yet, huh? Then I'll be the first.

you can not lengthen legs and humerus at the same time.

after legs are lengthened then you can do humerus.

before that forget about it.

Now you can't tell me that without proper argumentation! I'm feeling too enthusiastic for this idea...

well there is a lot of reasons why you cant. but the basics is there will be an increased chance of non union.
you wont be able to be mobile and so contracture probability increases dramatically as well as loss of range of motion.

they are already some major reasons.

if range of motion and contracture is prolonged then you end up taking years to recover.

if you are going to do humerus do full external monorail.

I never had non unions... My bones heal fast, sorry, I don't see a reason how lengthening arms and legs the same time would increase non-union chance.

Sorry, but that doesn't make sense either. I will be able to walk and what is more important - to stand just like before, and nothing limits me in terms of PT. It's been proven that humerus lengthening is the safest of all limb lengthenings.

Now that's a bad idea, monorails can't weight bear as much as Ilizarov's so if I try to walk on crutches with them, they'll probably go poof.

Alternative idea: what if I lengthen my legs first and as soon as I'm done with distraction and into consolidation phase, install the humerus frames? That way I can walk without crutches, because my muscles will be recovered better and the pain won't be, I'll need 5 months to remove leg frames, in 2 months I'll lengthen 5cm on my arms, and in 3 months I'll take all the crap off. Now THAT'S genius! What you say?

ps I am getting humerus. so I have done a lot of research into it.

I only gave you a 10 second answer before because I did not want to type much.

but yes your second plan is much better.

there are reasons as to why I stated to do full external monorail and only after legs are done.

ps how much are you planning to get lengthened on your humerus?

Yea I'll probably stick with my second plan, though that would mean 2 surgeries instead of one. I'll lengthen 5 cm to bring my arm span to 180 cm. I guess I can do 6, but I'm afraid of humerus-forearm dispropotion.

you should not lengthen your humerus the same typical lengths that we try to achieve for leg segments.

my advice is aim for a smaller amount on humerus.

Your body has to cope with tremendous amount of trauma if you do humerus along with leg lengthening. You will definitely need proper functional arms during LL and consolidation (you must be aware of this since you're currently a LL patient). I suggest you reach your target height and finish consolidation. Then see whether people actually notice your arm length in relation to your new height. If you do get comments about it and you're not satisfied, only then consider humerus lengthening.
At this stage, I think you have already endured so much from cross lengthening, you must be devastated both physically and mentally. You need to recover and take a break before humerus lengthening.

dont be afraid of the disproportion, your ulna length is the same or close to your footsize and there are a lot of people with your footsize that are taller and have greater armspans, so dont be afraid. but as far as lengthening goes, I have no experience but I wouldnt lengthen my humerus more that 4-4.5cm.

where are you going to do this humerus lengthening, I understand that not a lot of doctors do this type of surgery?

Couple of questions, first being how old are you. It is additional trauma but the younger patients are supposed to handle it better. What do you do for work? Curious to know how you can take so much time for LL surgeries. Are you able to work while lengthening?

Thanks for the kind words, but I'm actually feeling rather fine, the only thing that is killing me is time and that's exactly the reason I want to do humerus lengthening at the same time with leg lengthening. Now at this point it doesn't matter if people notice or not, it's about going to full potential. Also size S shirt sleeves are long for me lol, so I'll fix this problem also.

My doc does everything lol, he even does forearm lengthening.

I'm 22, but my callus formation seems to be above average, so I'm not worried about it. I'm unemployed, I lease apartments

I think you should stop. You will look weird anyway after this amount of LL.

The best thing you could do is seeing a psychiatrist...

Nah, I don't consider myself a legend, and it's late to stop, considering I have to lengthen to 182 anyways to even my legs and knees out. Now if I don't do humerus, I'll look strange, but other than that - what there's to make me look weird really?
