HP House / Assayag's Center: what is there for you to use?
« on: December 19, 2024, 10:18:06 PM »

Just going to list out some questions-- thank you :)

Note: I understand Assayag + HP house is NOT some luxury stay such as Betz / Becker's clinic. So I'm sure these questions could come off as entitled or out of touch-- that is not my intention.

1. Exercise: Is there a small gym or something either at the hospital, at the house, or nearby you can use? Dumbbells or cable machine? Bonus: is this a dumb question because even if there was equipment, I'm going to be too exhausted to even use it?

2. PT center: Are you only allowed to use equipment there during your PT sessions? or can you stroll in and use the other equipment available when you'd like?

3. Pool: Is there a pool for water exercises, either at the hospital or nearby?

4. Surrounding area: Do any of you stroll around the nearby area just to get outside for fresh air, or is safety a concern?

5. Television: I'd bring a nintendo switch to use with other patients. Is there a community television at HP house I'd be able to hook it up to for us to use?

Thank you!

Yeah there’s a big tv, I forgot to bring my switch I play SSBU.
It’s an open gym but the equipment is mostly bicycles and leg stuff with a few dumb bells and vibrating plates. It’s not much. It’s pretty nice here but I wouldn’t leave here. The neighborhoods around the hospital go from nice suburbs to super ghetto. There’s a lot of homeless people are the hospital outskirts. I don’t think you can use PT centers stuff whenever, but I could be wrong. I think after your session if you want to use something and they’re not busy they might. I go outside for air and sun it’s very safe, there’s hospital security, but as soon as you go up the road a little it can be rough with homeless people so I don’t leave the actual hospital if I’m not in a car. I wouldn’t scooter up the road

I have not been to the PT center on the hospital campus but the HP house gym is open 24/7 and it has a cable pulldown and chest press combo machine. The weight stack only goes to 100 pounds but it should be enough to maintain some upper body strength. It took some effort for me to transition to the seat during the first month after my surgery since I had to move my legs with my arms but it's doable. Everyone's pain and energy levels vary but I think within a couple of weeks most people would feel good enough to use it.

There is also a pullup/dip stand but I don't think there is any safe way to transition to it to use it. In addition, there are a couple of low weight dumbbells by the window.

As far as a swimming pool goes, Mount Washington Swimming Club is across the street but I think there is a waitlist to become a member and obviously this would not work in the winter time. I’m not sure I'd feel safe crossing a busy street in a scooter to get there so you'd need to take a car.
