When to pay the surgery deposit?

I guess it’s normal to pay a deposit to the surgeon to reserve a surgery date. However, doing this far in advance might not make much sense since the money could have stayed under your control in the meantime and have collected interest, dividends etc.

So my question is: When is a good time to pay the deposit for the surgery date? 6 months in advance? More or less than that?
