What determines the pain level of recovery?
« on: August 14, 2023, 10:54:34 PM »

A simple question would be to compare the pain levels of having 8cm of femurs lengthened vs 5cm of femurs and 3cm of tibia lengthened.
On one end, the femurs are being extended much higher than the second but one two bones are broken. So my question is how do I get 8cm with the least amount of risk and pain?

Anecdotally, more leg muscle equals more pain. But honestly who cares. This isn’t a surgery for the faint of heart. You should just expect there to be a lot of pain going into it, especially the first few weeks after surgery and during PT sessions.

Follow your doctors advice, some people do it have extreme while others it’s less. It’s really hard to estimate pain or risk. There’s pain and risk for sure

I did over 12cm on femurs. I clicked from 02/2023 to 07/2023.

Here is my diary with videos of my journey:

It varies for each individual. Best thing you can do is ask a qualified limb lengthening doctor not this forum cause the same ppl on here guiding you most likely you wont have the same experience as them. You're doing the right thing researching and asking right questions. Read older diaries, lookup videos on youtube for limb lengthening, and then book a consultation and have a bunch of questions ready for the surgeon. Common sense tells you the less cm's you'll do will result in the lesser pain. So i would think 5 cm femurs and then wait 6 months to do 3 cms on tibias but thats more of a mental toll too cause youll be going through it longer. This literally varies for each patient tho this is why you have so many different opinions on this pain topic.

The answer would probably be 8cm on femurs, only. The pain depends on how fast are you lengthening the bone. In my opinion pain doesnt matter that much. If there is too much pain you can always slow down. If you have a slow but steady pace (Im thinking 0.3mm/day), then premature union is out of the question. The future day in which you achieve sufficient consolidation is pretty much a constant, the clock starts ticking on the day of the surgery. Have a mercy on yourself and do an internal rod.

If my math is correct I would need 8 months to get 8cm with precice?

uh, Im more of a tibia guy, but people seem to be going at 1 mm, even 1.3 mm per day at times, with femurs. 8 cms is a lot, but you could be done with the distraction phase in 4 months easily, then about 2-3 months till some partial consolidation is set. Somebody with more experience could chime in

For 8cm femurs at 1mm a day (4 turns on erc device spread between 3-5 hours with precise) you'll be done in 3 months. Considering the factors that you don't need to slow down. Factors that can result in you slowing down will be: 1. Nerve pain (pain so bad youll need to slow down or skip days to feel less discomfort temporarily), 2. 4 turns are making you feel too much discomfort so you do 3 instead of 4 resulting in lengthening longer. 3. Forgetting to lengthen or not lengthening properly by not placing erc device in correct position. There could be something i'm forgetting but these are the most common things from my experience on it.
