1mm more everyday on tibias
« on: August 10, 2023, 09:13:46 PM »

My doc makes me extend my tibias 3 times a day, for a 1 mm total. Isnt it excessive? I heard that for tibias it should be less than .66mm aday. I have a nice blood flow through the area, and Im not gonna lie, I would like to finish it faster. Will that matter? What is a risk of non-union with such a speed of lengthening?

Fast lengthening on tibias totally will cause drop foot. So you will not be able to walk or will walk on your toes. Also you will start screaming in pain soon because of your speed anyways. So do not worry about non-union.

From what I recall, Android who used to share his experiences on this forum ended up with severe peroneal nerve paralysis from lengthening his tibia by 1mm per day.
So, unless there are special circumstances like early consolidation, it's generally better to keep the tibia lengthening rate at 0.75 mm or less.

thanks for the answers guys

Im already doing stretching and exercise like crazy, hopefully the droping foot will happen later, rather than sooner. As for the screaming in pain, Im already getting some pain, specifically after every .3 lengthening session (internal magnetic). How does this peroneal nerve paralysis happens? Is it something I can prevent? So, there are some cases of people going as fast as 1mm with tibias? Anyways, Ill probably try to slow down the process a bit.

Anything above .75 mm per day on tibias will almost guarantee peroneal nerve stretch and partial or total foot paralysis. Some get lucky, many do not.

Sounds like a Turkish butcher clinic

1mm should be the max, most of people do at this speed

This is incorrect and dangerous. Turkish and other sub standard clinics encourage unsafe lengthening speeds like this.

thanks, I wont try to push my luck, Im taking a day off. Thankfully I have a possibility to slow down my progress myself.

As for other things, I can feel that whenever I try to use my crutches and walk with them, Im getting a lot of crackling. The stretching comes from inside my calf/muscles (not the bone with rod I hope), its persistent and intense. It doesnt cause pain, on the contrary, walking with assistance makes my legs hurt less. Is it normal? Should I continue to walk it out? Im exactly at 1cm in distraction phase, right now (both legs).

Only 1cm - u have such issues? I heard people will have risk of ballerina feet above 3cm. For tibias should not more than 0.75mm per day. You may want to slow down LL rate further once you achieve 3cm. Tibias Betz nail daily rate is around 0.7mm per day and patients reduce the rate when hits 3cm to 4cm.

Ah, thanks for the assurance guys. In other news, the pain after clicking is getting worse, I need to slow down just so that Im able to keep up with pain. Still going forward nicely, I think.
