Hey y’all, I got my x ray and consultation done today, and was told that my bones are so narrow they will need to use the smallest precice nail for my femurs (8.5 mm).

The doctor said that I may have a 10% chance of nail bending as it is the smallest nail and thus more susceptible, which would cause them to stop my lengthening short.

He is known to be a very safe and skilled doctor, so I understand that he would disclose all the worst possible situations that may happen.

At the same time, this has me somewhat worried as I would be spending lots of money and be quite pissed if I had to stop lengthening short at say 3 cm due to nail bending.

They did mention that lots of East Asians typically have to use the smallest nail and that the doctor has had to tell this same story to new patients on a daily basis (it is typical)

Has anyone here had to use the smallest precice nail for femurs? Did your doctor tell you the risk of nail bending? Were you able to reach your goal despite using the smallest nail? If you had nail bend, did you have to stop your lengthening short? Thank you and god bless, hope to hear back soon!

Why do East Asian have to use smaller nails exactly? I have heard it often, is it as simple as having thinner bones?

Forget about walking and be prepared to be absolutely wheelchair ridden for 4 months.

I got the 8.5mm nail and have seen all Indian Precise patients getting the same. Your doc is right, one of our comrades got a nasty bend during lengthening without any weight bearing! (but this was after 6cm) and its very rare.

It doesn't mean that you can't reach 7-8cm. You just have to be very careful.

Can the other precise nail sizes weight bear?

Nope unfortunetly not. Only Stryde nails that was taken off the market 2 years ago could weight bear. And Nuvasive is extremely slow about re-releasing the nail. But according to Paley, the nail at the earliest will be out in Q4 2024...

Hey Man, thanks for the reply this was exactly what I was looking for. It’s def reassuring you saying that this is “rare” for the nail to bend even as the smallest precice nail, but could still happen.

Also it reassuring knowing that many people have to get the smallest nail on the daily and many of them are still able to reach 7-8 cm at the end of their journey. I will absolutely not weight bear at all and will treat my legs like they are straight made of glass throughout the entire lengthening.

Now I’m curious to know how to transfer my body to the toilet and bed from wheel chair without putting any weight whatsoever or pressure on my legs but I suppose it can be done effectively and I will have to learn how to be really careful. Thanks!

i think completly nonweight bearing the entire time will make recovery so much  harder for yourself.
its been shown that a lack of weight bearing makes bone formation harder.
in conjunction with that, your muscles will atrophy horribly, and make getting back to a normal gait take even longer.

imo
the best thing you can do is to get your body weight as low as possible, strengthen your upper body.
if youre exxtra keen, you could get a walker before hand and practice moving around with it

fwiw I think the limit they put on the nails are like really conservative. I have the largest 12.5mm nail which says I can weight bear 75 pounds. The earlier on it is before your nails stretch, the more you can weight bear, but they still put 75 pounds. But there was one occasion i vividly remember accidentally taking 2 steps without any support, so like maybe half a second on each leg with my full body weight at 150 pounds, and nothing happened. Not extra pain, nothing. Obviously I wouldn't advice doing that and i have been very careful since. But those advertised weights are completely conservative, so just wanted to give you a peace of mind. With that said, these nails still do bend because there are some careless freaks out there.

With Precise, you'll have to consider the wheelchair as your best friend so you've got to buy a good one with removable side arms so that you can transfer to bed/ chair/ toilet easily.
