Do muscles and nerves actually grow with bone lengthening? Or do they just stretch? I heard conflicting information from both sides. Some say they grow with bone, but slower and with a limit. Others say they only stretch with the bone lengthened but dont actually grow which is why you have to keep stretching your legs after the procedure.

They grow, but a slower pace than bones.
It's like earlobes, some people have holes in their ears so big, that a commuter train could pass.

Ok, the holes are not that big, but some people have very big holes, even if they remove the devices used to grow the ears, the big holes are permanent, the skin and nerves are longer.

Standing and walking are enough stretching to maintain what you have.  It's not like you have to do daily Yoga forever or be crippled.

Learned this one the hard way during femoral lengthening. Be extremely flexibile before going in to surgery, because the nerve pain was worse than the surgery pain for me. I’m 9 months out and I still have numb shins and shooting pains in my feet. This is a result of the nerves being stretched out. My muscles are still trying to catch up as well.

usually the nerves and muscles grow slower than the bones is able to replace. stretch mediated hypertrophy and nerves already have a great ability to repair. its rarely an issue with the bone itself unless the doctor messed up or you got an infection.

How much did you lengthen, femur or tibia?
Isnt it strange that you still have the shooting pains, even 9 months post op?
When you get shooting pains while lets say you are walking, do you have to stop or is it just a fast pain that goes away?

7.8cm Femur, shooting pains are intermittent and have been explained to me by my PT as my nerves healing from stretching out. I can walk almost normal 9 months post op, my gate is a little off but I’m working on it. Most of the time I fight through the numbness/tingling while walking long distances. I can not run yet but I’m working on it.
