hi guys, im new to the forum and i just want to start a discussion about lengthening.

Lots of diaries i read are big journeys and LLers mostly lengthen their femurs or tibias, but how come no one does a set of lengthening. If a LLer does one leg(tibia + femur at the same time) and leave the other leg intact for later, would this be a better way for 4 reasons. 1)the normal leg can support during lengthening 2)the time frame is probly almost same as lengthening 2 femurs or 2 tibias 3)this way preserves the proportion way better 4)less aggressive and more conservative. i want you guys inputs about this way of lengthening. The cost is probly higher(con)

internal methods are developed to lessen pain and to fasten recovery and distraction. This is the edge of technology way of lengthening (well, at least in terms of appliable). What you guys think about the future lengthening methods in the next 5yrs or so. i heard stem cells thingy which i dont understand at all.

Hi Rainy, welcome.

I think the issue with doing one leg before doing the other is that you will have a huge length discrepancy between legs for a while.  Your other leg wouldn't even be able to touch the floor to be used as support. And you're just about forced to go through lengthening again to correct the difference in length even if the first round of lengthening is a disaster. I asked my surgeon about lengthening one leg at a time earlier because someone had brought it up before, and he thinks it is a bad idea. It's preferable to do femur on one leg and tibia on another leg at the same time if you want to do both tibias and femurs at once.

I think the most that will happen with convential CLL methods down the line is that an internal device will be developed that is even more reliable in working/not malfunctioning. The principles of Ilizarov are going to be the same no matter what is used to lengthen, so I think there will always be pain and struggle in this process. As far as non-CLL methods to get taller after adulthood, perhaps there will be a way to open up the growth plates to allow growth once more. Probably will take a lot longer than 5 years time though. I don't see anything happening within that short a time period.

Dr. Alex Monegal prefers to do it that way; one leg and then the other so you always have one good leg.  If you're taking care of yourself that would make it much easier on you.  You can find more information about him here:

Hello. Another option is going to dr Ginebreda how is another doctor in barcelona. Monegal have worked with him. But Ginebreda is the top surgeon of LL in Spain. And he uses fitbone. I think the price will be similar. I have an appointment with ginebreda  in september.

Hi to all participants

Doing one leg first And then the other is not a matter of preference, it s for patient's safety when using any internal device. The reaming of both femurs or tibiae at the same operation is too risky because fat embolism syndrome.

This Was discussed Last week in Toulouse at the Fitbone users meeting, And we all agreeded not to perform bilateral cosmetic procedures as patient would be on a high vital risk.
Bilateral procedures can only be performed when using ex-fix. It is not even adviceable when doing LON.


On the other hand, i have worked 9 years beside Dr Ginebreda And yes he works in ICatme (Institut universitari Dexeus). I have been the guy in charge for the Fitbone project over there And the price for a single procedure (1 bone) is 24-25000€. I changed my Clinic a few months ago trying to make LL Mir affordable for my patients, And to focus in LL. In my new clínic a single LL procedure for cosmetic is 17-18000€.
