Hi guys,

I’m wondering what made your decision clear to do LL?

I’ve been going back and forth. Some of my concerns/considerations:

- Risky surgery, can lose some mobility (or all, and be stuck in a wheelchair forever)
- Life is basically paused for 1-2 years
- Proportions (I would do like 5-6cm max, but still some look kinda odd)
- Biomechanics, I’d like to be able to squat/dl/rdl etc still
- Not exactly sure if 5-6 cm increase would cure my height neurosis since everything eventually you get used to.


But then I also think I might regret if I don’t do it now. The older I get the unlikelier it will be for me to do it.

I know the “if you’re unsure don’t do it” sentiment makes sense, but I don’t think in this case it is that simple.

This is pretty close to where I’m at and I’m leaning more towards doing it. I would regret not doing it more than doing it I think (given that I do it right and safe).

And regarding your last sentence - I think it's true here as well. It's pretty much that simple. The people who do it are absolutely sure they want to do it (sure everyone have some doubts), willing to take the risks and put in the work. It's a huge financial, mental and physical sacrifice but the feedback from people who successfully completed LL tend to be amazing.

It's a very long and tiring process, and way harder than you imagine. People (and some doctors) tend to underplay the hardship of the process. If it doesn't bother you that much, spare yourself.

I know the “if you’re unsure don’t do it” sentiment makes sense, but I don’t think in this case it is that simple.

1- wheelchair is ridiculously unlikely unless your going with an idiot doc or take no care of yourself
2- no more like 6-8 months depending on nail
3- under 8cm I wouldn't worry at all about it, ive never seen anyone look weird doing 6cm and people rarely look weird in general
4- idk about that but yes that would be negatively effected
5- how tall are you? 6cm isn't anything insignificant so it might.

and yes if you are unsure, DONT DO IT, but also make sure you are properly educated. for me I am so sure I would do this procedure even if it costed 500k and was even more painful.

This procedure is insane and is only used as a last resort for people with height dysphoria who are below average height. It will be one of the hardest things you can do. That said, it has predictable results under normal circumstances with a good doc, so make out of it as you will. Most people find the pain excruciating and recovery torturous.

I think your playing it up a bit, but it isn't something that should be taken lightly.

No it is incredibly painful even with internals. Heard from people who did it that it is usually the most difficult part of their lives during the lengthening period. Look at real diaries the pain is no joke. You become crippled and alone for the period(mentally), and you struggle mentally on when you will ever regain your mobility. You should have someone with you during this period if you decide to LL, or it could get really tough.

Not to be rude, but I feel like some of the guys are underplaying the risks (or ignoring them completely) due to height dysphoria. And I do understand that, I am also pretty desperate to increase my height, if I wasn’t I wouldn’t be considering this surgery.  But I do think we still need to try to stay logical and not romanticize the surgery/results.

The more I look at some LL results the more I think it looks off. Longer femurs, worse leg/body ratio, short arms in comparison etc. Maybe I’ve only seen the extreme ones but it is discouraging. I’d like to go back to normal life not having some other issue besides height in the back of my mind.

Most diaries with pics are of people who lengthened above 8cm on one segment.
If you stick to max 6cms on femurs, proportions should look fine.

Agreed. And 6cm will still be great and life changing, even at 5cm the height gain/mental effects are very very noticeable

When we read forum posts of guys who say they did 8cm and have problems  1+ year out versus guys who did 8cm and say they don't have problems, what are we to make of it? That it is not always possible to tell what will happen until it's too late

I think the trends of forum members intentionally choosing to do slightly less length, getting the IT band release, and choosing a good device like Betzbone 2.0 --are all great trends

there is genuinely a very low risk of anything permanently bad occurring as long as you do the surgery with a good doctor dont lengthen insanely, and take it seriously. It's a well studied surgery. The proportion stuff is a valid concern but in the vast majority of cases things look fine. Leg to body ratio is irrelevant unless you are on the extremes of either end, arms will be fine as long as you're within probably 2inches (likely more but im unsure where to say the line is, scientific data says it literally doesn't matter but it MUST look strange at a point). Longer femurs is actually a commonly strange looking thing but still in most cases I think it looks fine... and its much much easier said then done but for someone like me who plans to do 2 surgeries my femur and tibia ratio will barely change.

and by permanently bad I mean an actual disability or chronic pain, not running worse. of course there will be tradeoff in athletic ability. but too many people on this forum act like they are professional runners and basketball players.
