How often do femurs break after nail removal?
« on: February 07, 2023, 04:53:14 PM »

It appears that Erkan has broken his femur after falling on ice after his nail was removed 5 months prior (best of luck to him, I cannot imagine how traumatic this is).  As someone who wants to play sports after LL, this is horrifying.  Im just curious how often this type of thing happens.

If you've had LL, have you taken some nasty falls and been fine?

Isnt your bone supposed to be of the same strength as before?  Ive also heard it takes years after removal to fully remodel and actually be as strong.

Thanks for pointing out that case.  At least he maxed out the nail and did over 3 inches.  Erkan only did a bit over 5CM.  Now his case was a bit fuzzy because he had to get the rusty stryde nail out and replaced with another nail, Im sure that didnt help.  Truthfully from looking at Erkans x-ray, if he didnt do a small amount of lengthening he was likely going to end up with a larger union issue that might have needed a graft.  I should probably let him speak to his own situation but it appears he wasnt healing well to begin with.  The x-ray must have missed a weak spot where the bone wasnt forming.  Still, super disturbing.  Just goes to show you can do a modest amount of lengthening and still wind up with issues.

Agreed, this is pretty disturbing

Damn, I was hoping to do nail removal just one year after the initial gnail surgery but I'm wondering now if I should wait longer just in case? Like 1.5 years minimum?

Not sure

I mean the things still under control in the short term are:
- vitamin D doses
- Calcium, magnesium
- getting the x-rays done
- getting enough walking practice while the nails are in to stimulate bone growth
- Dunno, I could also eat bone broth soup or those small white soft bones of pork ribs or very small sardine bones? not sure if that actually helps or not though

There is the sort of "well if I leave the nails in too long, the bone could grow so much that it covers up the screw heads, which will be very annoying for the surgeon/might require a bit more cutting/digging and I think a somewhat bigger scar". When faced with the fear of the bones breaking from removing it too early, this fear seems small though. Unsure how to weigh things

I dunno, after nail removal, should we play things super safe for a few months? Ex: no fast movements for a while, cane use, maybe even walker use on slippery surfaces like ice or water?

Yeah I was pressing Becker if I could get the nails out under 1 year and he was just like "well see what the x-rays look like".  This is why you need a doctor that tells you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.  Id rather get the nails out 5 months later than walk on eggshells hoping my legs dont break.

Good supplement list.  Im going to like 8-10k IU vitamin D in consolidation.  Look into Nicotinamide Mononucleotide as well to increase NAD+.

Not often.  Falling on ice can break a non-lengthened bone too.

yes, I think it's better not to remove the internals in a hurry. Also after the removal, we still have to take care for a long time

 NMN is related to bones?

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=nmn&crid=2IMP0RS2FVSM8&sprefix=nm%2Caps%2C426&ref=nb_sb_noss_2

I guess so based on the below, it looks good to me. I mean enough people are recommending NMN for alot of reasons anyway so..

I wonder if Becker and Giotikas have looked into it. I know that for some patients in Athens, they get some kind of injection (of a different substance, not NMN) to help with bone growth but I don't know what, heard some kind of hormone. I understand that NMN is something entirely different. They told me that my bone growth is good enough so far not to take this injection but I'm curious now

Ive been taking NMN constantly for probably 5 years at this point.  I havent stopped through the lengthening process.  As you age your NAD+ levels drop off.  So I figure Im just elevating them to a younger persons levels (not that Im that old).  If I consolidate early from it...well then Im an idiot.  But I dont think I will.  But your body needs NAD+ to repair itself, and I figure Im doing a lot of trauma to my body.
