How do you use the toilet after your first surgery?
« on: January 18, 2023, 12:41:25 AM »

I’m a female, planning to do Precise tibia but worried about the toilet situation ha. I’m kind of embarrassed to ask in person. I’ll appreciate it if anyone could enlighten me about this topic!

For the first days, are you hooked on to a catheter and your caretaker has to empty the bin?
Do you not have to worry about #2 because for the first few days, you won’t need to go?

How do you use the bathroom with Precise if the bathroom is too small to fit the wheel chair? Can you get out of your wheelchair and hop to the toilet a bit? I only weight 90 lbs, so I feel there’s less risk of bending the nails…

I have a YouTube playlist of videos for LL patients to answer your questions. Better yet, subscribe to my YouTube channel.

For wheelchair in bathroom, look for these videos:
Wheelchair to Toilet Transfer
Wheelchair to Shower Transfer

If a wheelchair doesn't fit, use a walker. Look for these videos:
Walker to Toilet Transfer
Walker to Shower Transfer

You need to find an accessible room with big enough gate. For 1st or 2nd day you might have to use bed pan.

Hey.
You'll have a catheter during the hospital stay, so no need to go.
Not sure if it's the hospital diet in combination with medicide, but I did not have to do number 2 at all during my 3 day hospital stay.

Yes, catheter is what I thought. It'd be so weird to use that
I've heard from other people too that they don't need to go #2 for a few days post-op.

The meds (pain killers I think?) are causing constipation, so you're less likely to need #2 in the first few days.
When you do need it, if you're still in the hospital - you'll most likely have a nurse to help you out. After the hospital, are you going to be by yourself or have someone to help you? That's super important, especially for the first few weeks.

As you've probably seen in the video, you're transferring from the wheelchair to the toilet (or pretty much anywhere...) using the walker. They'll show you how to do it in the hospital.

Hi hippo60! Sorry I didn't see your message until now. Yes, I'll have a family member take care of me. I'm glad to hear that they'll show you how to use the toilet at the hospital! I've been having general anxiety around this area and now I feel much better about it :)

To follow up, are you saying that in the first few weeks, you'll need help transferring to and out of the toilet?

Ha no no, you should be able to do it yourself. I meant that in general, in the first few weeks - you'll need someone to help you throughout the day. Do you know how long you'll stay in the hospital?

I don't think you can do it yourself, initial days are very painful and it was hard for me to do anything by myself. I did precise femurs.

I was referred to the "first few weeks" not days, which are definitely brutal. I assume she'll still be in the hospital and have a nurse to assist.
