External Fixators vs Internal Nails (Precice)
« on: December 30, 2022, 05:02:26 AM »

Hey all,

Whats your opinion on internal nails vs external fixators
I have a few questions about this debate, if someone, preferably someone with knowledge could answer these please.

1. For cosmetic lengthening why are Internal nails better External Fixators?

2. If an external fixator is used, what is preferred LoN or a Hexapod or another form and why?

3. Why is there a strong opinion not to use an external Fixator on the femurs for cosmetic surgeries?

Thank you

LON does not mean a monorail fixator.  I don't know how this misinformation got started.  It stands for Lengthening Over Nails, meaning a non-expanding internal nail is inserted into the bone, then the bone is lengthened by an external fixator.  When the desired length is achieved, a second surgery occurs in which the external fixator is removed and the non-expanding nail is locked into place and keeps the bone together until it heals.
