This first one seems to resemble the ones I see in Athens patients more but only has 4 stars:

This one below looks more comfortable and has a higher rating:

https://www.amazon.com/Plantar-Fasciitis-Adjustable-Achilles-Tendonitis/dp/B0B9GCGZGX/ref=sr_1_5?crid=QE5S2MYK8ZL7&keywords=night%2Btime%2Bcalves%2Bstretcher&qid=1667329518&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIyLjM2IiwicXNhIjoiMC4wMCIsInFzcCI6IjAuMDAifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=night%2Btime%2Bcalves%2Bstretch%2Caps%2C193&sr=8-5&th=1

I'm thinking of wearing one of these before I do tibias in Athens to train myself to be able to sleep in them/tolerate them. It is only like 30 bucks so I'm willing to experiment with them. I'm not sure which one to get though.

I'm not sure because of this:
- the top one is more like the one they give in Athens -> favors top one
- but I wonder if actually just the second more comfortable could just entirely replace the one they give in Athens or not. I cannot tell if the second one is insufficient (ex: do we need a hard back covering/shell like the first one for the night splint to work effectively?

Which kinds have you tried and what were your experiences?

I think you're better off sleeping comfortably and stretching during the day.

Thanks, I'll do that then

Unrelated to that, before the tibia surgery, do you think its worth it to buy and try on tibia splints? Excluding sleep time

No.  Standing will work better anyway.

Are you planning to go for betz bone for tibia? I am planning for that too.

I'm going for Giotikas tibia 4-5 cm precise 2.2 because its cheaper. Gonna do it 1 year after my femur surgery (one year is not really required I heard but there's some stuff I want to do first back home)

I think you might be correct that Betz tibia and going for more than 5cm might be a better option for most people for tibias. I'm starting to think that maybe Betz 5 cm tibias then rebreak later to grab 2-2.5 more cm might be good, not sure (would have weight bearing + would satisfy both of Dr. Betz's and Dr. Paley's limits I think?)

The thing still bothering me alot is Dr. Paley's 5cm tibia limit for one go and the huge contrast between that and Dr. Betz telling some forum members that they can go ahead and do 10-11cm in one shot on tibias. Like my brain is having difficulty comprehending such a huge difference in recommendations. I feel like there is some kind of missing communication/need some more clarification from Dr. betz/Becker because 10-11cm tibia in one go with no rebreak, like even 9 cm tibias sounds like guaranteed ballerina foot time to some of the forum members. I mean like what the hell is the explanation? Are weight bearing nails just that much better? Are Guichet/Betz getting all of the super flexible gymnast type patients?

I don't see myself ever going above 5 cm for tibias now I think, I just don't have the motivation or courage to go for more because my starting height (somewhere between 166-170cm) is not that bad and I don't feel I have much to gain from the additional risk

Make sense. Precice is very hard and as tibias are slower to heal I don't want to do precice. I've done precice for my femurs and it was hard even though I had excellent help.

My guess is that some of it has to do with nationality.  Paley is in a very litigious country and orthopedic surgeons are disproportionately sued compared to other specializations.

That makes sense, I didn't think about the countries/nationalities

I think Nemer (Ukraine?) and Birkholtz (South Africa) recommend about 4cm on tibias, but 5cm seems more common with other doctors for tibias. I think Dr. Parihar (India) and Dr. Giotikas (Greece) often allow patients to go to 6 cm. And then I think Dr. Paley and Conway (USA) recommend 5cm tibias

And it seems that Guichet (Fra) and Betz( Germany) allow patients to push 7,8,9 cm+ on tibias, though I might be mistaken for Guichet

The other thing I noticed about betz is him not doing IT band release most of the time for femurs and his reasoning for this. He talked about how some patients were able to go back to work very soon after the surgery partially because he didn't do the IT band release and how he only does IT band release in some uncommon situations. I also find this a bit odd how doctors can disagree so much on this issue -- to my mind, it feels like Betz is catering more towards the best/better case scenario patients whereas other doctor with practices like 5cm tibia limits + immediate IT band release for femurs are catering more towards the worst case scenario patients

And this is making me think "if someone knows that they have bad flexibility, maybe they should default to going for the more conservative rules, ex: 6-7cm limit on femur, 5 cm limit on tibia, and do IT band release for femur)

The other issue I know doctors disagree on is whether to fix the upper portion of the fibula during tibia lengthening and Dr. Giotikas said that among surgeons around the world, they were about 50/50 split on this issue at a conference, but the reasons he explained to me flew over my head
