Confused About Quadrilateral
« on: September 20, 2022, 05:47:21 PM »

My goal is having 11cm total height gain, so my options only match with quadrilateral LL. However, i cannot decide if i put 1 year apart or get in 3 weeks apart.

  • If i put 1 year apart from femur to tibia, that means i will have 2 years of adaptation, recovery, going back and forth to US.
  • Also i might not be able to schedule for 2 consecutive years, having 6 months off from work and family.
  • Also i'm concerning about feeling burn out by getting 2 years of pain, not walking, prolonged rod removal time, etc.
  • If i get it 3 weeks apart, then it might be too harsh for me, so that means i might not be able to reach my goal.
  • If i get it 3 weeks apart, then i can move on to my life to recover, that means i will suffer only 1 year.
  • If i get it 3 weeks apart, i can easily schedule without any problems.

Why i just don't get 8cm on femur and move on? Because i think tibia/femur ratio is important, so i don't want to lengthen one segment too much. Also my dream height lies on the 11cm+ size.

I'm doing strecthes and, and will be doing for nearly 1 year to be flexible as possible. Also i will be around 145 pound / 66kg before surgery.
What do you think ?

PS : i'll get precice for femur 6,5cm  + tibia 4,5cm , in US.

Check with your doctor, but I think general 10cm max they'll have you go for in doing both at the same time. I year separate surgeries and 8+5 is the usual max they are comfortable with. At least years ago that was Paley Institute limits which I thought were typical of the better US doctors. Consider your SHR as well. Good luck.

Lengthening simultaneously (3 weeks apart ) is EXTREMELY HARD. both physically and mentally.
To get good, safe results, you will most likely slow down lengthening faster.
However that’s how I treat most lengthenings for patients suffering from achondroplasia.

1 year apart is not easy. it is still lengthening, but it’s more comfortable, and the odds of reaching your goal is higher .

I’m thinking about doing the same. In Greece they have an option for quadrilateral LL and it’s 2 weeks apart which seems pretty short IMO. I’m trying to find out more about diaries of people who have done it…

(my opinion only)

Going through CLL now, there is absolutely NO WAY I would do quadrilateral without a significant break in time to heal. This is a hard, HARD surgery that is painful, exhausting, draining and takes a lot out of you. The risks also skyrocket - Dr. Paley talks about this, having done it with one patient.

You have plenty of time for both. Your #1 goal should not be height gain. I know it sounds contrarian, but, assuming your Dr. will ask you what your goal is (mine did), your answer should be to walk again normally and come out of this procedure without any side effects.

Minimize risks, exercise patience, and do this right. Good luck

I agree with Uponly. No reason to rush and take a BIG risk. Besides if you do quad lengthening you can only gain smaller amount of height, than you would be able to if you did only leg at a time...
