Lengthening at home?
« on: June 20, 2014, 02:19:56 PM »

I know you need to check in every two weeks or so, but air fare would still be cheaper than housing. I'm considering staying in FL for lengthening with Paley for a month or so, then returning home and doing intermittent checkins as he requires. I could also do some work that way which would further help mitigate costs. Anyone else done this?

Really excited- Unless I hear something I really don't like I'm hoping to do my surgery asap afterwards.

As someone who's currently lengthening with Paley and was considering leaving after the 2nd week here, I feel like I have some insight for your question.

Lengthening at home is not worth the few thousands saved.

First of all, Dr. Paley can make calls after a follow up with you that would require you to come in the next week, instead of the next 2 weeks.  That's what he did for me, after he saw my first x-ray and was concerned about my fast consolidation.

Secondly, practically everyone advises against it, the doctor, PAs, and patients lengthening here.  You have everything you need in the hotel you stay at (which is entirely handicap accessible) which you probably won't have at home.

Thirdly, transportation is difficult.  Imagine this- you have to lengthen and stretch everyday, how are you supposed to do both stretching and lengthening when you're on a plane most of the day travelling to WPB and back?  Unless you stay at a hotel for the night, but then you're squashing PT and lengthening into a short period of time.

I was in your same position, wanted to save money but most of all, wanted to live with my parents and have them take care of me.  But I realized, the short 3 months I'm here which are already fully paid for, are entirely worth staying for.  I get everything I need, and I'm also safe.  I can stroll into the clinic and get a follow-up with either a PA or the technologist if I think anything is wrong.  You are also surrounded by a community of lengtheners who are in the same position as you and know what you're going through.  There's a wheelchair accessible lift into the pool which I'm sure you don't have at your home.  There's a lot more reasons, but to sum it up, it's worth every penny to stay.

Interesting feedback, what are your thoughts on staying in FL but making occasional trips back home if some work opportunity arose etc? Or is leaving really that poor of an idea.

I don't think that's a bad idea at all!

I had a few business meetings that were planned for this next week, but I had to cancel them due to logistics.  The main problem is that you're going to be in a walker/wheelchair your entire time lengthening.  Using a walker for hours on end just isn't doable because your arms get worn out, but then transportation via wheelchair becomes difficult as well unless you have someone to drive you around and take apart your wheelchair and store it in the trunk.  If you're taking a wheelchair, you'd have to also ensure that wherever you're going is wheelchair accessible.  I realized it just wasn't possible for me to stay a week where my meetings were, especially when I also needed to bring my ERC device (which has its own suitcase) as well as my own personal luggage.

But I definitely think if you're doing just simple day trips for business or staying at home, that's not a problem at all.  Just keep in mind the transportation logistics- will you be taking a walker, or your wheelchair, who will be assisting you, who will carry your luggage in the airport, how much distance can you travel with a walker, etc.

Btw, if your consult is in July, would love to meet you!  Swing by Homewood Suites and you'll meet a lot of fellow lengtheners. :)

How long of a wait did you need for your operation to be scheduled? If I like everything I hear, I basically want to begin as soon as possible so I can be back and operational asap. I've already made my deposit and all, so I'm officially locked in to the process.

I was told I only had to be there for a night, so I might not be able to meet you during my consult, but if everything moves along quickly you would probably still be there and I'm sure I'll be hurting for company/support(not a soul knows I plan on doing this) so I'd be happy to meet.

My business is content based, and I have a ton already made to keep me afloat either way- but a commission can be anywhere from 500 bucks to 8k, which would really help me rebound financially(assuming this all ends up close to 100k I'll only have 60k to my name after). I wouldn't be able to participate in making content, but I could at least film it/instruct my business partner to film it.

Also I'm doing invisalign currently(thinking of this as self improvement summer lol) so I'd pretty much have to travel back for that at some point regardless at least briefly.

Random question, and not sure if you can gauge it, but how possible is being sexually active during all this? Not doggy style of course, but her on top?  I ask since I might be able to save on an aid by having a chick I know around there help out haha.

Forget doggystyle during lengthening or every position which involves pressure on your leg

No thats the one I know is def not happening. The only ones Im really considering are her on top and maybe where we are both on our sides. Those seem like they might be viable.

Sounds pretty risky because her weight may push down on the osteotomy site and may cause discomfort. It may probably cause disturbance to the callus and the implant. But I honestly don't know and the best person that will be able to answer is Dr.Paley.

I had my consult in the beginning of March and the earliest I could schedule my surgery was May 29th.  Dr. Paley is also extremely busy over the summer so I don't think you'll be able to schedule the surgery in the summer.

Company is a must during LL but you'll have a lot of people here to make friends with and talk to :)

As for sex positions, I'd say a big no to her being on top.  She could land on your osteotomy site resulting in a bent/broken nail or even damaging your callus.  BUT, there's a few positions you could do.  I'm on week 3 and right now I'd be able to do a position with her lying on her stomach and me kinda lying on top of her (not sure what that one is called).  You could also do missionary.  You could even do doggy as long as you lean forward and hold on to the headboard or wall.  Albeit, I would suck at any sex right now LOL  :P

Damn thats really bad news about how long it'll take for surgery to happen. Really messes with my timeline if I have to wait three months.

And actually, thats more ideal as thats my favorite position anyways(called speedbumper)

Always a chance that shes misinformed but she sounded pretty confident.

I probably wont have anyone for hospital time. But after that yeah.
