Trouble getting post LL xrays back at home in USA
« on: August 17, 2022, 03:26:25 AM »

I asked my primary care doc back home in USA, says she won't do the xrays or refer me to someone

Tried calling the hospital schedule to see a different doctor, they are having trouble entering my health insurance into the online system (in the past they had to call the insurance company to get money, it doesn't enter well into their computer systems). They told me to email their insurance department, who told me go back to hospital scheduling (loop)

What would you recommend?

Surgery in Sept
Coming back to USA later

Can Readymed, (walk in doctor places) be used to get xrays after coming back home to USA?
https://readymed.org/

Need to eventually send Dr. Giotikas xrays after coming back to USA, having trouble finding a doctor willing to do this

Here is your problem: you're seeking medical treatment for something that hasn't happened yet.

I think no insurance will cover anything unless it's a real complication.

standard follow up xrays, physical therapy etc will not get covered because you knew you had to get them even before surgery.

You need to find a private practitioner (for CLL surgeons are) and ask him to do it for you and pay out of pocket

After it happens, they will be more likely to do it? But don't I need to establish a patient-doctor relationship before they will be willing to do the xrays? Ex: how do I know they will be willing to do it unless I meet them first? Can't seem to be able to contact doctor by the hospital's phone before meeting them

I sought threatment from two U.S. doctors when I came back.  One private, one through my HMO.  They both helped me because I rolled into their office in a wheelchair with nails in my legs.  I'm sure they would've told me to get lost if I had walked in there with a spring in my step before I'd even left for China.

It's commendable to want to have your ducks in a row before going, but that can't always happen.  You won't get baby ducks from these doctors (x-rays, exams) unless you provide the mama duck (surgery) yourself.  Kind of like the part in my diary when I was mad at the government for making me buy a plane ticket that would entail throwing away $1500 if I couldn't get a passport, before they would even consider giving me a passport.

Thanks! So the best strategy is not to tell them your plans and to just walk into their office on crutches/wheelchair after the surgery is done and then tell them in person?  I imagine I can't bring my crutches back from Greece to USA, so should I buy some crutches when I come back to USA?

Id say the problem is more trying to use medical insurance on a LL part.
Id imagine the way to go with this is to pay out of pocket at some private X-Ray clinic. Although I imagine the cost for an out of pocket X-Ray in the US could be like 2000$ or something.

So the best strategy is not to tell them the purpose of the visit until I stroll in with crutches? But when I'm booking the appointment with the orthopedic doctor, what reason do I give them for the visit? Thanks!! Still having difficulty finding someone, trying to have a good strategy later this year after the surgery is done

Tell them the purpose of your visit when you have a purpose for the visit other than "if I get LL will you give me an x-ray six months from now?".  Until then you're wasting the doctor's time and yours.

for periodical xrays after returning home, $200 is nothing every 3 months, go to the clinic, pay out of pocket and thats it

insurance is a backup to help if you get mangled, like hasaki who got destroyed by buldu and now needs extensive(6 extra surgeries), which will be largely covered by his american insurance as its a medical necessity. they know he had a COSMETIC, ELECTIVE surgery made by his own choice, which unfortunately went wrong and he now is disabled and in pain. its lucky and great that his situation is above the needed threshold set by the insurers of coverage of complications of elective procedures

without insurance, 6 surgeries in the USA, especially the type he has had and will be having(multiple hour long, general anaesthesia orthopedics) will run into the 3-4-5 hundreds of thousands of dollars. while he basically paid like 25-30k for the initial surgery. imagine having to pay 500 000 USD to fix complications of a 30 000 USD surgery

my advice to you is to make a good judgement on your potential doctor and your height target in order to minimize the possibility of having to use insurance when you return at all

Right. But the problem is, no one in the hospital near me is even willing to see me at all, out of pocket or not. What I'm trying to figure out is: will that change if I come back? Do I have to some kind of pain or medical problem before they will see me?

I told the local hospital already before I read this and they said they won't do x-rays for a surgery done outside the country. I'll get the surgery done and then be back later this year. When I get back, Dr. Giotikas still wants me to send him x-rays every 5-6 weeks around 3-4 times. If I go to the same hospital, well unfortunately now they know and won't they just tell me to get lost again?

Should I go to a readimed or urgent care of some kind to get the x-rays?

Do I need to wait until there is pain or some kind of severe problem before someone would be willing to see me?

What would you recommend at this point?

I'm wiling to pay out of pocket but I just can't find any doctor near me who is willing to prescribe the x-rays at all even considering that. And Dr. Giotikas says I need to send him x-rays every 5-6 weeks even after coming back home.

When I get back after the surgery, I am not sure if that situation will have changed. What would you recommend?

Get a Kaiser Permanente HMO and then ask for a referral to an orthopedic surgeon. Once there they'll request x-rays when they follow up on you and then you can pick up CD images of your x-rays that you can later send to Dr G.

I got leg lengthening and I wanted a second opinion about the quality of the work that was done.

just go to the emergency room, tell them you had both legs broken and fixed abroad a month ago, but that day you fell down with your walker as it got stuck on the carpet and want to make sure the legs are ok

Get a Kaiser Permanente HMO and then ask for a referral to an orthopedic surgeon. Once there they'll request x-rays when they follow up on you and then you can pick up CD images of your x-rays that you can later send to Dr G.

he already has an insurance, and they say they'd decline his xray requests
also you cant "get a kaiser permanent HMO" in the middle of the year, he has to commit to this insurance network from january 2023 and be on it the entire year
