Potential early cessation of lengthening with the g-nail
« on: August 09, 2022, 09:08:32 PM »

I am currently lengthening with the g-nail and am at around 4.1-.2 cms in, goal was originally only 5. I had severe pains when clicking throughout the duration of lengthening, weird because I remain one of the most flexible.

I have been unable to click for 3 days on one of my legs (right), due to severe pain - it’s as if my tendon is being ripped from my leg and I am unable to force the click and push through.

Any advice is welcomed, it seems if I cant click soon - I will be forced to move into consolidation

What is the doctor advising? I know they sometimes numb the region to help you click until the pain eventually stops.

Will speak with the doctor tomorrow, got some clicks done but they were extremely painful ranking around 9.5/10 (this isn’t an exaggeration + my pain threshold has been rigorously tested this lengthening phase) I think my body is begging for mercy as after the clicking, my right leg is completely wrecked for the next couple of days. I am around 4.2cm lengthened maybe a little more, although I would have liked to reach the goal of 5cm, I am able to finish here satisfied - around 179-180cm.

I seem to be the exception though, not the rule. I had a much longer ‘Inflammation period’ lasting 2/3 weeks instead of the usual 1. I had strong pain from the 2nd week of clicking - progressively getting more and more painful as I lengthen further, the opposite experience of most other patients (they had much less pain than myself) It’s weird as I remain very flexible, maybe the most flexible here, hopefully my bone looks good when I get the xrays, the nurses, doctors and physios have been very helpful, I am very grateful.

Meeting other patients has been a huge help encouragement too, I’ve also spoken with and met some older past patients - one who did 8cm and was getting the nails removed, he looked and moved completely normal as you would pre op, some inspiration, I cannot wait to walk unassisted again and get my muscles back.

Again not to scare anyone away from the g-nail, I think it’s just wise to prepare for pain in the case you find yourself unlucky like myself and V21, every other patient had a pretty much smooth clicking experience lots going even 8cm and slightly more.

Are you lengthening with Dr Giotikas or Guichet?

Did they say what the reason for your longer than normal inflammation period?

Hopefully they can just numb the area for you so you can reach 5cm!

thats heartbreaking to read, after paying so much, risking so much, and enduring the torturous first 1 month you now cant even lengthen comfortably

what kind of painkillers do you use on a daily basis? would a 150mg tramadol dose before lengthening help with dulling the senses? codeine? oxycontin?

tramadol doesn't really do anything for me even 300mg + a bunch of the other stuff, I’ve been on all the painkillers - it genuinely feels as if the clicking rips my muscles, tendons and ligaments in my leg. the difference between 4.2/3 and 5 is not that large anyway.

the whole process has been arduous and difficult I won’t lie but that’s to be expected, I was just rather unlucky when it comes to pain, but it seems any dysphoria I had was cured at around 3.5cm, weird how things work out

What did the doctor say?

I'm glad your height dysphoria has been cured!

got some xrays done and met with the doctor, my consolidation seems to be going very well I think I have fast consolidation, I suspect this is why my clicks were so difficult. on the flip-side though I can hopefully walk unassisted sooner at around 6 weeks.

I also asked him about the knee pain I was having, he did a flexion test and told me there is a small sprain, I told him about when it started (the ripping sensation during the click) and he let me know some tissue may have been ripped during that click - this could be attributed to my fast consolidation, im not sure I didn’t ask.

I have a 4 millimetre discrepancy in one of my legs, the doctor said this is fine, I had 2mm even before my operation. Clicking will aggravate the sprain and I am already consolidated so clicking would be too difficult nor will it really make a difference. LLD’s only become an issue at around 1cm.

Now just worried about this sprain, and the ITB issues I was having when walking, if anyone has any tips on getting the ITB right, feel free to let me know!

Can someone answer when early cessation happens? After how many days of no clicking?

there is no solid answer, each persons bone consolidation differs.

Although I found skipping a few days every now and then would allow for some recovery and ‘slightly’ easier clicking - I only started skipping any clicks after around 3cm when my IT band went completely nuts and I had to get a cortisone shot for it.

I know of a patient that went 2 weeks without clicking and managed to get one done although I think his consolidation was quite slow and he has a LOT of pain when he finally did clickafter those 2 weeks off.

Was your IT band cut during the initial surgery?

Wishing you a speedy recovery!

I thought Dr G always cuts the IT band now. Maybe because you expressed you only wanted 5cm it was felt it wasn't necessary

IT band was actually released during the surgery, I think the problem with my hip/glute is caused by a screw

Here is an xray of my legs, I think my bone callous is decent - let me know your thoughts

You can see here the left legs proximal screw is further out, this is the side I am having pain on, I presume this is what is digging into tissue/it band getting caught on when I move

I am not clicking anymore, nor ever again thankfully - I finished at around 4.3cm lengthened, a bit earlier than most people over here but I was happy with the result now 180cm, I am a couple weeks into consolidation and already feel the improvements. Looking forward to walking unassisted and starting the full recovery - I hope with 4cm I am able to make a full recovery :)
