Fixing Bowlegs + Lengthening
« on: June 17, 2022, 09:34:42 PM »

Hey everybody,

I have bowlegs and I want to know what is the best method to fix it accurately. It should be external fixator? If so, then I should to be on the frames for almost 10 months?!! What if I want to lengthen more while fixing my bowlegs?

Is there any effective way to fix bowlegs and lengthen at the same time?

I have read about Dr. Lee in Korea but not sure yet, and he seems pricey as US doctors!!!

Also one more question, on the YT channel of Dr. Lee, they reply to people by comments that a one's height remains the same after fixing their bowlegs!!! is this true?

Thanks guys, I really learned a lot from you about this surgery.

Yes, you can fix a certain ammount of bow legs and lenghten, which even helps. But you need a good doctor and externals. That's what I'll try to do myself.
Maybe this thread helps to chose the right questions to your doctor if you don't get even more confused:  http://www.limblengtheningforum.com/index.php?topic=70686.0

You can lengthen and fix bowlegs at the same time.  One guy I knew in China said he chose China for that reason - his insurance would've paid for Paley to fix his bowed legs but not for LL, and he only wanted one surgery.

Your height will increase if you straighten your bowed legs.  It's simple geometry that if you straighten out a curved line, the line will reach farther than it did.

Thank you so much, I really read your posts and saw your straight legs, I really want to get those legs as well. But as you said, Dr. Xia is so old now and even it's illegal to do it in China anymore!! What do you suggest please?

Dr. Xia used an Ilizarov fixator.  Other doctors who use it, or the TSF if you have more money, can do the same thing.

Thank you.

How does TSF work? I accessed Dr. Lee's website and they say that they fix bowlegs by an external fixator then LON, what is the most effective method? Using pure external fixator?

Thanks

TSF is a more technologically advanced version of the old Ilizarov.  They both work the same but the TSF is more precise.

The guy in China who did both simultaneously was doing LON, but I think in severe cases it would need to be pure external during the treatment.  You could then do LATN if you don't want to leave the frames on during consolidation.

That's great, thanks.

Do you think using LON or LATN with an external fixator is a bad idea on the knee? Have you used LON too? or just pure external fixator?

I recommend full externals.  They were my first choice but that did not turn out to be possible for me due to the limited options available in 2007.  I was kind of trapped in a corner and it was either LON or nothing.  Now I have tendonitis in my patellar ligament because of it.

Oh that's bad man, I'm sorry to hear that. I thought that the problem was only you did 3 inches instead of 2'

How long do you think I should be on the frames if I fixed my bowlegs + lengthening up to 4 cm at the same? Just pure externals.

How does TSF frames better than the traditional externals? It's smaller?

Thank you

Yeah, the knee issue has nothing to do with the amount lengthened.

I think it's about a month per cm on average, but it depends on your rate of bone growth which can vary significantly from person to person.

TSF has a lot more joints so it can manipulate the leg with more precision.  Look for a picture of it and you'll see.

I see, thank you so much.

BTW, do you know any good doctor for TSF frames? Do you recommend any doctor?

I have contacted Dr. Lee but I got no reply for almost a month now.

I don't know.  I think they're common in the U.S though.

open wedge osteotomy isn't going to add much height at your frame
