safety of 8cm femur lengthening?
« on: April 29, 2022, 09:00:56 PM »

I'm a little under 165cm (mid-day height), and I want to do 8cm on my femurs with Paley. I've been researching this procedure heavily for about a week but i'm just so confused. Ive spoken to Victor from cyborg4life and he seems to think I should be able to recover to normal or beyond (my current normal is at the absolute bottom of my athletic ability, I've literally never worked out in my life and I live a very dormant lifestyle partially due to my height insecurities). I see people on here saying you will never be able to run again if you go over 6cm etc. I want to be a musician so being able to run and be decently flexible for performances is really important to me, so its making me doubt going through with this. Even if I don't go into music, not being able to be run would really almost be a deal breaker. If it was a low risk I would do a second surgery to get to a little above 5'9. So theoretically if I did femur and tibias to get 13cm, would I be able to run like a normal person (with exercise etc to get there) 2 years or so after? What about with the 8cm femurs?

I feel like Paley would not offer these options if they were as unsafe as some on here lead you to believe. Whenever I look on actual studies of CCL patients the far majority are satisfied and have no big issues but the people online lead me to believe you will never be normal after going past 6cm.

to add to this, I see Sweden did over 5cm in his tibia (with horrible dr. sarin) and has now had a very good outcome and is still a competitive athlete, so I don't understand how something within the safe limit (8cm femur) could be debilitating as long as its OK with Paley.

I just wish I could have a solid answer because my unsureness about the safety keeps me researching and I want to move on with my life until I have the funds.

If you are doing internals then I don't see why you wouldn't be able to reach 8cm if your doctor allows it. I can't imagine anyone losing the ability to run after a single LL surgery on their femurs, though I would tone down your expectations on the time to recovery - maybe two years before you expect to be fully recovered from a single LL surgery and nail removal.

Your doing  almost exactly what I want to do, in fact my original plan was Debiparshad. So how's it been. Ive also seen people saying you can walk just weeks after with Stride but that sounds too good to be true.

I mean technically I walked around the hospital room with a walker briefly on the same night after I had surgery in the morning. I mostly walked with a cane for a few weeks/months; it wasn't actually necessary and I could walk unaided, but psychologically it was good for safety. Stryde is way better than anything else for lengthening, but obviously had it flaws so it's not on the market right now. It not existing is why the forum is kind of dead compared to before.

You can skim through my journal if you want more details. You should at the very least read through a few journals using the same method if you want to get this done.

Hey a fellow 165cm looking at femur lengthening with Paley! From what I understand its doable to the extent that your body allows it. And Paley's team won't/shouldn't let you go beyond your own limits to the point of sacrificing function. If you hit a wall, they won't let you go further, which I take as a blessing vs. tons of clinics worldwide who allow the patient to dictate their endpoint at great risk. But 8cm is certainly doable in terms of recovery, again its just difficult and also is dependent on your body in some ways.

I've read many journals but they just confuse me because it seems many people have wildly different outcomes. I was just reading yours, which actually I have also read before I made my account. Do you feel like before your nail removal, you could run and jump periodically over a two hour period and not be in extreme pain? Im 100% sure with CLL and a good doc you could walk normal after but i'm very confused about the actual athletic abilities you have after because I've either seen people saying as long as you work hard you'll be fine, and I also see people saying you will only barely be able to run.

& another question for anyone reading, would going from 5'5 to 5'8 make that much of a difference, to me it seems like a world of difference. 5'8 to me is basically average (u can't really tell a 5'8 person from a 5'9 person unless you actually measure & with the right shoes you can appear 5'9) but people on here who are 5'8 or very close getting LL makes me think that's still not good enough. I could go to 5'10 with 2 surgeries, and I know for a fact that I would be very happy at that height, but I wouldn't think that's necessary. TBH, when I wear my shoes that make me appear 5'6, it really doesn't seem that bad to be even 5'6 (ESP if u were wearing the shoes which u would be 5'7). When I was out in public I felt short, but normal, I was taller then a couple grown men that looked normal to me so I didn't feel like a freak like I usually do. IMO 5'7 and above seem to be perfectly normal heights, maybe picky bitches wouldn't want you? but do other men really judge you for your height at 5'7? at 5'8 I feel like any shortcoming of your height can be made up for, and socially it isn't doesn't seem strange at all to be 5'8. Are the people on here just being dramatic, or am I really deep in the pits of hell and I don't realize it?

Im so shocked because I expected to be one of the tallest on this forum, I thought it would be more people that's 5'0-5'5 but it seems like we are actually a minority here.

hello brother

aside from cll. How's your life? is being this height really that bad? I'm about to go to college and concerned other men & women will judge me for being so short. However somedays it seems like nobody cares, and before last year height never really bothered me. Regardless of how good of a life you can have at 5'5, I still want CLL. I'm my own biggest hater and I won't be completely happy till I feel normal in my own body.

how do you plan to pay for Paley?

Hey man,

I'm only a bit past your age (a couple of years out of college) so I can relay some of my experience from the past few years. Honestly life is pretty fine, I don't think being 5'5" is some kind of horrible sentence or anything, especially in college. Its actually IMO the cutoff for reasonably normal height (any shorter and I'd say you'll start facing a lot more judgement). There's some blackpilled people here who would have you believe its some kind of actual curse to be under 6 foot which it definitely isn't. I have been with many women, & no one makes fun of me or judges me outwardly.

But its mostly how it makes me feel inside - I am also my own "biggest hater" and I just don't feel great about being this height. I feel small when I'm around other people, and its that insecurity that gnaws at me. I've always been the short guy so I've felt this way since I was a little kid. I think the fact that this comes from inside for you is the best reason - its about how you feel about yourself most of all, and if being this height bothers you, I say thats a good enough reason to go for it.

I was also surprised at the people here who are 5'8", and it made me feel the same way as you, questioning if getting these 3 inches is even enough. Let me just say, after thinking about it and reading a lot of people's experiences, it absolutely will be worth it. It brings us to as you say, around average height, which for me has been something I've always dreamed of. I've always been short, just being average is amazing! Would I like to be 5'10" with the femurs and tibias? Hell yeah. But you know what, just getting to 5'8", which makes you taller than 95% of women, and brings us from under the 10th percentile in male height to around the 30th in the US is a really big deal. And if your big concern is women, again literally 95% of them if you're in the US will be shorter than you, at that point if shorter girls want you to be taller than that they're not even worth going after.

In terms of paying for Paley, I have been saving a lot from my job and have to admit I'm getting some assistance from my family. $100k+ is no joke, but for the best cosmetic leg lengthener in the world to bring me to around average height, its damn worth it. Sorry for the bit of a diatribe, its just cool to find someone who is coming from the same place as me in terms of approaching lengthening, especially thinking of the same doctor. Keep in touch with me brother, I am going for my consultation with Dr. Paley in June and I can hopefully give you more information as I approach my surgery.

I would never consider telling my family at this point. its so embarrassing plus they would probably be like wtf are you talking about. my dad is like 5'6.5 and but claims 5'8 and my mom is like 5'0, my family is VERY short in general on both sides. i'm going into computer science degree so hopefully after a few years of saving ill be able to afford Paley. Whether its music or whatever I go into, im pretty smart & charismatic when I want to be so I have confidence I will make the money. Ive also been short forever, the only time I can recall being around average height is in the 7th grade, I hit my growth spurt a little early. I remember me and my friend we're the exact same height then and now he's like 6'2 or 5'11 or something. Honestly it's funny, when I think back I don't even think about height, I could never tell you how tall people are who I knew a while ago even relative to me because I never even thought about it. But yeah lets keep in touch. comforting for me to know there's someone just like me going through this & also that you don't feel that ur height is very strange. Are you not going to wait for stryde? I'm only 18 so im poor as   so I can't really afford any CLL right now but even if I had the $100k right now, id prod just invest it for now and then wait till stryde comes back and use my gains to fully cover and profit a bit.

One piece of advice I have for you guys is that do not let this affect your career prospects.. I am 5 ft 6 as well but at times it did get the better of me in college etc. You might see your tall friends getting dates easily, sometimes treated better etc. Rather than getting depressed, accept that it is what it is and focus on your work/study so that you will have the means to do LL when the time comes. Easier said than done but most people do it

Ah I understand how you feel about your family. My mom and dad are also around the same height as yours. My dad thinks doing this is absolutely crazy (which on some level, it is), but my mom is really supportive of me about this. She has known my whole life how much my height has bothered me. She was the one who actually got me into looking at Dr. Paley! I'm lucky as hell to have her. I do recommend trying to get one or more of your parents onboard with the idea - not now since it seems you are a few years off, but when you are ready to monetarily make the plunge. From reading people's experiences, it seems that having good support, especially a family member who can possibly be with you through the lengthening process itself, is a huge boon. My mom is coming with me for the 3 months at Paley, which I cannot thank her enough for. Seriously, moms are the best.

Its interesting, height bothered me a lot when I was little, then it didn't really in middle and high school, then it started bothering me again in college. I think its just when you start perceiving that there are social limitations, true or not, because of your height, which there were for me as a tiny kid, and are again for me as an adult. I have never been average height so its honestly always been a huge dream of mine, to just feel like I'm not the smallest guy around. And its hard to feel like that when over 90% of men are taller than you.

I agree with the above poster about height and career prospects. DO NOT let it affect you in that way. So what if the stats are that taller people on average make more $$$ or something? Push through that bullcrap, the world rewards your competence more than anything, especially in a field like CS. You can do very well for yourself whatever height you are.

In terms of Stryde, no I am not waiting for it. The latest information seems to be that the current Stryde is dead. I am sure a new weightbearing nail from the same company will be released at some point, but I don't feel the need to wait for it. I would rather get this done as early in my life as possible rather than wait an undetermined amount of years for Stryde 2.0. I am hopeful though that for you, a weightbearing nail will exist in a few years from Nuvasive.

To be very basic, I think 8cm femurs is only “safe” if you are 5’9” or taller. But it’s possible for everyone. Just gotta prep like crazy an pt even more crazy.

I lengthened 8 cm and I am able to run. My gait is normal. Try to max out the nail. Recovery is going be a bit longer. I still have minor numbness on my left shin and it has been improving monthly.

Yes I run 5 miles everyday..I take quality supplements curcumin and glucosamine daily. Sometimes I have knee or hip pain/tightness but it goes away after stretching. I also use the massage gun after workouts. I think my body is still adjusting to the height gain
