Anyone tried a percussive massage gun during LL?
« on: April 27, 2022, 12:01:56 AM »

Too dangerous? Painful? Feels good?

the claim of 'breaks up scar tissue' sounds good but how do you know if its too early to use it/would just pulverize the wounds?

Ex: internal gnail femur

I've been tempted (when I will be doing LL) to use a vibrating pillow under my legs for some time when lying down, hoping that the microvibrations help bone to heal through the "micro pressures" and impacts (generally speaking, impact and tension hardens the bone and increases its density) but am also afraid that it causes more disruption instead. And don't believe the doctor will clarify this "idea" lol

I did as a Paley patient

It's fine. Just don't hammer the osteotomy site too early

Same here, I did at Paley's at several weeks after femur surgery. It's fine, start on lowest setting first. I believed the gun helped me ease the several-week long femur pain (due to new growth bone rubbing the tissues, only triggered when rotating the femurs to certain degree), and that I was able to dodge percocet and gabapentin.

Thanks!

1. During internal femur LL what were the best and safest spots to aim the percussive massage gun?

2. What about during internal tibia LL?

1. I'd say wait 2-3 weeks after surgery. For me, I ran the gun vertically on my femurs on all sides (360 degrees - hope it makes sense), always put on lowest force setting

2. Same setting I gently massaged only the calf muscle side.

In general don't press the gun against your muscles. Keep it far & slowly get closer. You'll find the sweet spot where your muscles feel a massage but not painful. The doctor's assistant's suggestion is that "if you feel pain, stop".

a. ty!! "vertically on femurs?" ? If I am sitting on a chair, where do I aim the gun?

2. "Only the calf muscle side" -> so only aim the gun at the meaty part of the calves muscles for lower legs?

1. "vertically on femurs?" meaning you'd run the gun between hip & knee, just up & down like that. If you're sitting then just massage the top part of your thighs. Later into LL, your thigh muscles will get back some strength allow you to lift your thighs up to massage the bottom area.
2. yes, just the meaty part.

Don't anticipate too much. When you actually do LL, you'll automatically get it right.
