Some general questions about tibia lengthening with LON
« on: March 04, 2022, 10:50:59 PM »

Hi, I’m a 25 year old male at just under 5’9. Fit and heathy with a good weight.

While I’m not short, I’m currently pursuing a modelling career. I get decent work now but I could progress much further if I was a bit taller, and being a strong 5’11 range would help my career massively. After thinking about this for a long time, while the surgery is expensive this would be a good investment for me.

For it to be worth it, though, I couldn’t go with the most expensive methods like Stryde. I’ve settled on LON — Apparently getting LON for Femurs isn’t recommended, so it’ll be the tibias.

My question relates to the maximum possible gains. Ideally, I’d love to get 6cm, but the feasibility of this seems a polarising topic. Many seem to suggest the maximum is 5cm, but there are also just as many that say 6cm is possible but that this really is the upper limit (anything beyond 6cm and you could have serious issues).

I’ve seen the stickied thread with doctors giving their takes on the safe lengthening amounts, but even that seems to vary widely.

I’ve also heard about actually losing a couple of mm when the fixators are taken off, but again, I’m still unsure whether this will be the case are not.

I’m grateful for anything you can tell me on the above topics. As I understand it, your muscular flexibility is a big factor to how much you can lengthen; if I did a lot of flexibility work prior to having the surgery, would my chances of reaching 6cm be better? I won’t be having this done for a while if I do get it done, so I’d have plenty of time to increase the flexibility of my muscles (which I’m sure would help me anyway whatever safe range is possible).

Many thanks!

Doctors usually recommend a safe limit of tibias between 5 to 6cm. Since you are on the taller side for a LL patient, closer to 6cm would seem to be safer (assuming your tibias are not excessively long).

However, if you are planning to lengthen femurs as well, then it would be better to stay with 5cm limit on tibias.

Remember being a model is not a career for a lifetime. And maybe you should worry more about minimum one or two years lost to get a reasonable physiology, "as before". You run risks of altered gait for more time than that, which would ruin your model ambitions (sorry, only trying to be sincere, LL is not a walk in the park). Aren't there shorter models in several niches of the industry? 5"8 is already a very sought after height by women for example in the UK.

Plus, LON in tibias is frequently (at least 2 sources indicate more than 50%) associated with long term or permanent knee pain. You can check scientific bibliography quoted here in the forum and in Pubmed.

Yes, you should try to stretch your tissues before surgery, not only muscles but very specially Achilles tendon, particularly if you go beyond 5 cm (that decision can be postponed to the lenghtening phase itself, when evaluating your own response). Total preliminary indicative lenghtening amount also empirically seems to depend on the chosen method and quality and frequency of physiotherapy.

6cm at our height seems just as safe as 5cm for shorter people. Should not be a problem, especially if you do only one lengthening surgery, and not two for max total gains.
