What was the worst part of LL?
« on: January 19, 2022, 01:56:41 AM »

I'm getting LL done in June and I've done a lot of research and the only thing I can't wrap my head around is not being able to walk for 6 months.

How did you LL veterans that used precice non weight bearing nails deal with this?

In my head this would be the worst part of this surgery but I'd like to hear from LL veterans that have done this already with the precice 2.2 nails

I did externals, but the toughest part in general was the constant exhaustion from multiple sleepless nights.

Would you advise sleeping pills to knock yourself out?

Everybodys LL journey is different. I for the most part didnt have a lot of pain and slept quite well except for the first 2-3 weeks. Internals are definitely easier to handle than externals or lon. For me the worst part was the waiting and the years of uncertainty before I was able to get it done. Nothing during LL was even close as bad as all the mental pain I endured all my life, because of my height.

In regard to the non-walking, you will get used to it. Humans are masters at adapting to  ty situations.

Yes.  I took one every night that I had brought from America.  I think they helped me out a lot; the hospital was full of insomniacs mostly taking cat-naps.

What brand of sleeping pills would you recommend Medium? I would like something that's not addictive or habit forming?

Looks like I'll be trying them out, then. Sleep is super important to me.

I took Trazodone.  It's prescription-only though.

The biggest negative for me is going to be not being allowed to squat and deadlift for over half a year. Gosh, that still pains me.

That makes sense. I had to have a chest surgery and wasn't able to sleep on my stomach for weeks and I thought that would be the worst part but I actually got used to it pretty instantly . And the worst part ended up being an itchy compression garment I had to wear.

Do the days go by quickly? In my head it seems like things will be so slow since Im going to be immobile for so long.

You mean just having to stay home or being stuck in bed? I'm normally a homebody so if mentally i'm feeling ok I wouldn't mind stay home for a few months and just reading books and getting work done

Everything is the worst part.

The whole thing is absolute torture for months and months and months.

Not just pain (which sucks, especially post surgery OMG!!) it's also being incredibly uncomfortable and not ever being able to sleep well (think Chinese water torture).

But it does work.

Think hard on if you really want to do this.

If you are close to average height I would seriously question the viability.

If I had my time again would I do it knowing what I know now?..... I don't know... I really don't know. Probably not.

But. After time the horrible experience will become a just another memory  I suppose..

Would you advise sleeping pills to knock yourself out?
All sleeping pills will reduce the quality of sleep, and make it less restorative. But of course if the alternative is you are only getting a couple of  ty hours go with the pill. If you can get a healthy amount of sleep without a pill would be ideal.

Yeah I'd advise sleeping pills as long as the Doc gives the ok. I had no got some heavy meds after about 5 weeks (of complaining) definitely helped a lot.

Yeah I did externals / tibia 5.5ish cm (precice wasn't available outside US at the time and I just wanted to get it done).

Did you do internals Siegfried or are you just making an assumption (not having a crack just wanting clarity)? Externals are worse but I wouldn't assume internals are a walk in the park.

Everyone (including pre lengthening me) always cherry picks information and comes to the conclusion that it isn't that bad.

Yeah, I can understand that. If I was anywhere near 5'0, I'd be lengthening basically as much as is allowed by my doc.

Yes, i actually did precice 2 in my tibia and femurs and it wasnt bad at all. At least nothing like you described. the first 2-3 weeks were painful, and afterwards I was pretty much fine. I stopped taking all my pain meds after 4 weeks and got back to my normal sleeping schedule. After 5-6 weeks I didnt have any pain anymore. The only annoying thing is the immobility of not walking. So internals are pretty cool.
Ive never heard anybody describe it as bad as you did to be honest, even if you did externals.

That's what i'm most worried about, being so immobile . How did you deal with that? I'm doing the precice 2.2 also so I won't be walking for like 6 months from what i'm reading

There was a guy in Beijing who quit after less than a month.  I think he got one cm.  He pounded on the walls and moaned and groaned all the time.

There's a wide range of responses.

I'll stop talking about my experience as it seems to upset people and I don't really care.

Please feel free to keep talking about it.  Upsetting people on here can't be helped due to the poor mental/emotional health of most people who seek out information about breaking their legs on purpose.  And that includes me.

Some here have been rude but when you say such things as "extremely this n that" u MUST say the method n the doctor and he did externals with (!?) ..those are crucial aspects that people need to underline because internals might be painfull and whatever u want but never heard of that experience from anyone ,and since in 2022 80% or more I would say  , are seeking for internals ..then he should be more carefull and less alarmist  ,according to me .
