There was a guy in Beijing who quit after less than a month.  I think he got one cm.  He pounded on the walls and moaned and groaned all the time.

There's a wide range of responses.

I'll stop talking about my experience as it seems to upset people and I don't really care.

Please feel free to keep talking about it.  Upsetting people on here can't be helped due to the poor mental/emotional health of most people who seek out information about breaking their legs on purpose.  And that includes me.

Some here have been rude but when you say such things as "extremely this n that" u MUST say the method n the doctor and he did externals with (!?) ..those are crucial aspects that people need to underline because internals might be painfull and whatever u want but never heard of that experience from anyone ,and since in 2022 80% or more I would say  , are seeking for internals ..then he should be more carefull and less alarmist  ,according to me .

Everything is the worst part.

The whole thing is absolute torture for months and months and months.

Not just pain (which sucks, especially post surgery OMG!!) it's also being incredibly uncomfortable and not ever being able to sleep well (think Chinese water torture).

But it does work.

Think hard on if you really want to do this.

If you are close to average height I would seriously question the viability.

If I had my time again would I do it knowing what I know now?..... I don't know... I really don't know. Probably not.

But. After time the horrible experience will become a just another memory  I suppose..

Since you say you may have prefered not to do it, it would be important to know your initial height. Do you mind telling, please?

Buspiron is an anxiolytic that sometimes helps to sleep and is not addictive contrarily to most others.
Quetiapin is used for several purposes, not considered a sleeping pill,  but that doctors sometimes use to facilitate sleep because it's also not addictive. Same with antidepressants such as amitriptiline and trazadone.
Classical sleeping pills (hypnotic benzodiazepines) all theoretically cause addiction but this depends on each one (never occurred to me). Usual effective ones are for example temazepam and flurazepam.
ALL of these drugs are prescription only and should be screened by the doctor to be sure they don't interact with others or harm formation of bone.

The worst part for me was the difficulty sleeping during the distraction phase, though the "worst part" varies with patients. When a patient is lengthening, your body needs a lot of rest and sleep to heal (i.e. build up callus and then bone formation, as well as 3 weeks from surgery). However, you are stuck sleeping on your back, because it's very difficult to shift your body while sleeping. But your body naturally shifts around while sleeping to get comfortable. So about every 2 hours, I would wake up with muscle stiffness and poor circulation, then stretch to relieve the tightness and get better circulation for several minutes, then go back to sleep.

At least 2 hours of sleep was enough to get 1 REM cycle of sleep. Around 7 to 8 weeks after surgery, I managed to sleep on my side for some variety. Then when I finished lengthening, I noticed my required sleep started to slowly and steadily decline a few weeks after to more normal levels, I was sleeping longer (like 4 hours or more) before waking up, and my sleep quality improved.

Sorry I am still confused about the terms of LL. Distraction phase it means the doctor inserts equipment into the tibia right?

No, the surgery phase is when the doctor inserts the rod (if internal) into the femur or tibia and does the osteomoty.

Distraction Phase - Also known as lengthening phase, it is the time (usually for 2 to 3 months after surgery) when the patient is lengthening the bone (usually 0.75mm to 1.0mm per day) with the External Remote Controller (ERC) (my profile icon is an ERC).

Consolidation Phase - After lengthening is done, the patient is waiting for the new callus formation to turn into solid bone, and well as do physical therapy to restore muscles, walking gait, and athletic abilities.

You can only achieve at most 10cm even with quadrilateral LL.

yeah i guess worst part really depends. I've heard people sleeping just fine shortly after surgery.

Do you think a comfortable mattress pad or something like that would have helped? I read another persons diary who said they started sleeping after they got something to put on top of their mattress to make it more comfortable

This is a straight up lie.

Overdozer did 15cm and Apotheosis did 18cm. Stop trying to hold back other short men for your selfish goals.

I think a comfortable mattress pad could help a little, though sleeping would still be tough (but at least a little less tough). It should make it easier to lie/sleep on your side, because a softer mattress should alleviate the pressure from the upper locking screws (if you are a femur internal lengthened). It should allow you to shift your body a little more while sleeping.

No, you got me all wrong.
The lengthening amount actually depends on individuals and a little part of patients insufficient in the abilities of tolerating more lengthening can only lengthen no more than 10cm and just call it a day but I dunno the exact rate of this kind of patients of the whole but if you are so unlucky that you are just one of them then IMHO it's the worst part of LL cuz you can only achieve no more than 10cm with so many torments and so much money and time.
