Author Topic: The fact that height is mainly determined by genes is a logical or genetic fact?  (Read 966 times)

Since the genes about height are not discovered and researches completely due to the technology, I am wondering the fact that height is mainly determined by genes is assertive or based on genetic evidences.
I am not skeptical about this matter of fact cuz I am not that retard but I am curious about the very original researches about it.
Are there multiple researchers who discovered this fact or just only 'logicists'?

It's mostly genetic.  Only the seriously malnourished would lose potential height.

But give it a rest, you guys talking about wanting the height you "should've" had and nothing more.  Live in the present.  You're a certain height now.  Does it cause you problems or distreses?

Here's one data point on how malnutrition can impact growth. There have been some couple studies measuring the final heights of people who were hospitalized for eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa in their teens. Teens that recovered from an ED were shown to have stunted growth compared to their genetic potential (calculated using the heights of their mothers and fathers); women fell 1 - 1.5 inches short of their predicted height, while men fell 2-3 inches short I believe. I don't remember off the top of my head if these numbers described an average or the standard deviation or what.
"Genetic potential" calculations have some degree of error, but I am guessing there was a control group or control statistics on how tall non-ED teens grow compared to their genetic potential.

Pretty intuitive that starvation during adolescence = stunted growth, but I think it's cool they attempted to quantify it. Searching "teens" "anorexia" "stunted growth" should bring up papers like this

It really wouldn't be possible for height to be determined by anything else, but it can be significantly influenced by environmental factors like nutrition and growth disorders.

Drug abuse, sleep deprivation and injury are also contributors to loss of potential height

Sure but malnutrition is actually a disease not just something like 'I am picky about food', 'I love cookies so I don't achieve enough nutritions' and similar stuffs. Malnutrition must be examined by medical tools or other professional methods I think.

Well I wouldn't equate anorexia nervosa to being "picky about food" (maybe this isn't what you are doing). In the most severe cases, these people are on the verge of death.

Malnutrition is an umbrella category describing situations where the body is not getting enough calories, other nutrients in the proper amounts, or it cannot absorb nutrients. Technically, if you only ate cookies, you would also be malnourished. I just don't think anyone has quantified height loss in people who get enough calories, but spend those calories on crap. My guess is it would be a very small loss compared to people who are not even meeting their caloric needs.

With the anorexia study I just meant to provide an example of some extent of malnourishment resulting in some measurable extent of height loss

Haha, I don't know. I could guess.

If you had two copies of the same person and everything was the same except copy 1 ate only cookies and copy 2 ate whole foods, copy 2's obviously getting more nutrients so more balanced hormones --> better growth hormone production. Could be millimeters, maybe a centimeter? Absolutely just guessing.

I remember reading about a girl who ate nothing but chicken nuggets all her life. I wonder how she stacks up to her predicted height.

hi guys, I too am convinced that nutrition and sport have influenced my final height, even if you say they have little influence, because most of it is due to genetics; but if, for example, we think of the boys who live in countries where there are wars and where there is serious malnutrition and various diseases, in any case many of these boys become quite tall and also with beautiful bodies, because genetically they are like this;
Unfortunately I will never be sure of how much it could have changed, if I had done a lot of sport and ate better and more, we can only think that maybe the difference would have been a few cm, at least if we think this we are better mentally 😂

I agree, no use dwelling in the past and ruminating over woulda, coulda, shouldas. I made this mistake and let myself get pretty depressed over it. I wondered how I could look and feel now if I treated my body properly in my growing years. Still do, but fighting to not let it get to me. Your current happiness should only depend on things that are within your control moving forward. And the lessons learned from your mistakes can be applied to your future children if you have any.

it is true, it is useless to think about the past, but it is difficult not to. I understand your anger, I also have these thoughts, but we are not sure that much would have changed, as you said too, maybe we would have been only 1cm taller, or maybe 6cm taller, but we can't know, and maybe this is even worse, because at least we had a confirmation and we put our soul in peace, instead we think about it all the time!

for example, even if now we do some analysis of some specific values, like hormones and other things, we get current values, not adolescent values right? Sorry I am not a doctor so i apologize if i am saying wrong things, mine is just a question, thank you.

A lot of people have touched on things like sleep (which is huge), malnutrition, sports etc. These are all true, I’d like to add another potential and lesser known cause of not reaching your maximum potential height.
Excess fat signals the body to aromatize testosterone into estrogen at higher rates. Estrogen signals     for the growth plates to close. This is why women stop growing earlier than men. Being obese or just overweight during puberty will limit your growth.

Also a side note to malnutrition, low protein intake specifically will reduce growth factors. This is good for lowering cancer risk, and bad for increasing height.
