Questioning doctors promotion of 8cm in femurs and 90% recovery.
« on: November 25, 2021, 08:07:15 PM »

I feel like over the last couple of years doctors have been changing what is considered a safe lengthening amount. I feel like percentage of the original bone amount was more emphasized than it is now(I forget the amount, I think it was 15%=safe). Now every doctor I hear says “most patients Can achieve 8cm”. This makes me wonder if the doctors are promoting this length because it sells better. Ya, most can get the 8cm but what’s the recovery rate? Maybe we just have more info that this length is okay now? How much are doctors factoring in the long term health of patients while promoting this length?

Next, I’ve seen a couple of posts recently discussing this exact thing. I’ve lost faith in the idea that you can fully or almost fully recover from this surgery. I hear “90%” or “you lose some peak athletic performance”. I don’t know what I think the recovery is like long term, I think almost no one does. There is so little info on this, mostly just speculation and what the doctors who are selling this surgery say. If we’re to guess the 90% recovery is more based around those that do that 15% of original femur bone length rather than these flat numbers like “8cm femur”.

The vast majority of of LLers disappear or stop updating recovery after consolidation. Obviously this is expected but it gives an incomplete picture.

After all we just have longer bones (we can lengthen two segments if we think ratio affects athletic ability) and weak and tight soft tissues. They’re all recoverable. I do think peak athletic performance is probably not recoverable in most cases because we’re getting older. For people who never did lengthening surgeries, they won’t be able to keep their peak athletic performance as they get older.

The fact that majority of LLers disappear after consolidation probably means they are recovered really well. At least I would come back and post updates if I don’t recover well.

Paley’s assistant told me 80% of patients can reach 8cm, 100% of patients can reach 5 cm. I feel Paley’s institute is actually trying to lower our expectations. I was super flexible last year when I did femurs, but they never said I could reach 8 cm. This year I’m doing tibias. My goal is actually 6cm but I told them 5 cm because I know they would try to let me down and lower my expectation… if you’re worried about other doctors selling CLL, Paley can be a good choice. They will stop you earlier than other doctors because they’re very strict. I know some doctors will let you keep going even if you have a bit drop foot. It won’t happen at Paley’s institute…
