IT Band release controversy?
« on: November 11, 2021, 03:05:13 PM »

I've had a consult with Betz. While many people regard him highly, there seems to be a lot of apprehension due to him shying away from IT band release. Would someone mind explaining the controversy and if it's necessary?

I had consultation with Dr. Robbins a few days ago, and he said that there is no risk for cutting IT band.

I had a conversation with Betz on it too.

Here's the breakdown of controversy from my understanding (not that I know that much anyways):

Some people have wide legs / duck ass (legs that bend outward I believe as the standard position when standing/sitting). This is a result of IT band muscle not being stretched well enough. There's a surgery to just cut the muscle called IT Band release then the wide legs and duck ass immediately fade. I think almost all doctors that I know of except for Betz performs it (I didn't do extensive research on each doctor) and recommends it.

In my conversation I had with him, his position is that it is good tissue and why would he destroy good tissue in the body. He claims that many of his patients do not have those issues at all. I think many patients do agree. Some patients posted about having these issues and having to get IT band release somewhere else costing them extra money. He says that if you do get wide legs or duck ass, it'll eventually fade. Some patients claim it did not fade at all and they needed this additional surgery. Other diaries did say it faded. Lastly, he says if they haven't done enough exercise or physio then it's probably the reason why they got duck ass and wide legs to begin with because they're not stretching the IT band enough. I think I read one comment on the forum citing that it's incredibly hard to stretch the IT band so it's not their fault and another comment citing that the release is so minor and heals really quickly.

I am not getting my IT band released and will see how it goes with Betz since he was quite persuasive and I just didn't care anymore. But personally for me, If I came this far to attempt a surgery to cut my leg bones into 3 pieces and try to grow them out, how bad can cutting a bit of tissue be? I'm not sure of how large the cut is but everyone is saying it heals quite quickly.

Betz also said he can do it if you want it. You should be the first one to try that (I just didn't want to be the guinea pig for that).

Note: I directly asked Betz about ITB release and told him what the forum is saying about him and how some of his patients claim they needed to get ITB release. For example, I said someone claims they got ITB release from Giotikas (I believe that was SirStretchALot). He just started throwing shade at Giotikas saying how he had a failed surgery before and the patient approached Betz to have him fix up what Giotikas screwed up on before. He says Giotikas only cares about the money. I sort of lol'ed inside because that was my perception of Betz himself.

As you said...if you are there to cut the bones...ITB release should not be an issue ..ahahah
Why to go over wide legs/duck ass/harder PT to preserve a tissue that eventually will heal and that most likely will probably need to be released later on .

I don't want to be the first person to have an ITB release from Betz. Also, if he disapproves of it, I don't want to get on his bad side since I want to maintain a good relationship with my doctors because I'm worried if I don't, they're less likely to help me if I need them.

That's your right , but if that is how you have to behave with your surgeon...isn't it the wrong one to go with ?
