Talk me out of it!
« on: October 05, 2021, 08:18:58 PM »

Im 37 and 5'9.

I'd love to be 6ft. Limb lengthening was a dream in my youth. I found about it back in 2006 and it seemed barbaric. I even mentioned it to an orthopedic doctor  when I was seeing him for a shoulder injury at 24. He put his hand on my shoulder and said "don't even think about  if it was free"

It seems times have changed, i now see videos of people who have had CLL and are happy. Only thing is, they are younger. I could never afford Dr.Paley until  relatively recently. I made a decent chunk off stocks and crypto and now I can't stop thinking about having a surgery.

I guess what i want is some of you more grounded, rational people to tell me no, its too risky.

Let me know your thoughts. Thank you.

If this surgery is always on your mind and think it can cure your height neurosis/ whatever problem you have then go for it. But if you can go on without the surgery then move on.  This is just my opinion. Do what you want

I want it very badly, but I am just afraid of complications. The pain does not scare me, but things like nerve damage do.

You’ve mentioned Dr. Paley right? He’s the best Dr in the world for LL so you would be in good hands. Maybe do a consult with him?

dont do it cuh... you have so much money on your bank account dont need no god damn limb lengthening.
buy a porsche and a harley and enjoy life my man.
Dont get into this LL  . There are so many complications that can occur. Even years after surgey you have to
deal with some problems. Dont ruin yourself! Dont listen to people who advertise this as a surgery you do on the fly.
Or simply move to thailand! Find some hobbies that will keep you interested and rather invest in some books about psychology!
Grow your personality and assets instead  8) 8) 8)

The surgery is always going to carry risks, despite some doctors hailing the advancing of limb lengthening technology with internal nails as something that will make the process no big deal. At most, internals will increase your comfort during the lengthening and consolidation process compared to externals, and will minimize external scars (which is mostly an issue with femur lengthening), but it will still come with aches, pains, sleepness nights, etc. I don't think there's a surgeon yet that underwent cosmetic lengthening themselves, so everything they can tell you is either based on word of mouth from their patients, or just what they've read based on published studies.

Absolute worst case scenario, you get a complication that kills you. Second worst? Probably limb amputation. Maybe your bones just have incredibly poor regeneration and never join back together, requiring multiple other surgeries to fix. Or maybe you get permanent numbness in one or both of your limbs. Maybe it's just as simple as a permanent feeling of tightness in your hamstrings or calves that never goes away, or your balance is considerably weaker. Or maybe even after you hit that 6 foot mark, you notice absolutely no difference in how others perceive you and then you start to wish you invested in something else with all that time and money.

Compare what you stand to gain from hitting 6 feet to what you can potentially lose.

The risk’s KiloKAHN mentioned are all possible going into this surgery. But that’s the decision you make. Looking at the positives a lot of people say this surgery is life changing and cures all of the height problems they have. Doing internals with a reputable and experienced surgeon will be the best option.

Tough, but very insightful advice.

I can give you a reason in one sentence.  Your starting height is like 1.5" over my ending height.  5'9" is good man, if you were like 5'2" or such, I'd say go for it.  But being an average height...keep your money, range of motion, athleticism, etc.  I did this procedure.  I'm coming up on 2 years and I can still feel it.

There is no known case of anyone losing a limb because of LL, stop with this nonsense.

But as for the OP: at 5'9'' you won't get much out of it. LL it's life changing for people like me who was 5'5''. For you will be a slight improvement. I wouldn't do it if I were you.

There is at least one incident of someone developing a deep bone infection during a femur operation in an OR that wasn't properly sterilized and then sent home anyway, which resulted in her limb being amputated later. This was in Europe.

5'9 is above average for most countries, taller than average girls height by 5-7 inches. If you are having height dysphoria or dating at that height, you probably have other issues to care about.

@KiloKAHN seems to have the best advice here. Can you live the rest of your life at 5'9 and still be somewhat content? Is that money better spent elsewhere? Is it worth spending 100-300k to be 6 ft when there's a chance of death/amputation/ permanent tightness?

In contrast, if you always live your life afraid of the 1-5% worse case scenarios you might as well not drive or leave the house. The decision is yours bud. Weight out the pros and cons to make an informed decision. Best of luck!

You're only 37. Why are you talking like you're 55? you're still considered young too.

I dont know your motives for doing this or what triggers your lack of content for being 5'9 but if i were you and had the time/money to do it i would. You're basically investing into yourself mentally and physically, but for sure like the other commenter said you need to ask yourself if being taller would outweigh the risk of getting a serious complication for you and if you can live with that decision. Good luck

My take is this: if you have to think about it, you don't really need LL. You don't face real heightism or serious height dysphoria. People that are really suffering don't really think in terms of "should I do it?" but in terms "how can I do it?".

If your height only started bothering at 37 it's not really a problem.
When you are really short you start suffering in your teens.

At first I disagreed with this rationale since I think everyone has to think about it to some extent, but I see your POV. Everyone I've heard about getting the surgery would've done ANYTHING to become taller so they were surely focused on "how to get it done" more than "should I?".

Eventually anyone can't persuade u out of it unless you can become an enterpreneur or luminary in certain aspect, but easier said than done and noy everyone can win a fortune and reputations in the lifetime, I'd say maybe the only way out of it is just to do LL and only if you live in a perfect shell as you want, you can get rid of dysphoria.
