Dealing with pre-surgery nerves
« on: May 27, 2014, 12:47:00 PM »

First off, please don't judge me. While I have some decent experience with pain (which I'll talk about below), I've never had surgery before...so I can't help but be nervous about this procedure (Precice 2, internal femurs). Even though I'm doing it with the arguably the best doctor out there, I'm still nervous about it all. I chickened out last time (partially due to my some family members' horrible reactions), and really regretted it, so now I'm on the waiting list for a new date (hopefully within the next month or so).

I've broken my left ankle twice in my life. One of the times I broke it, the doctor actually set it while I was wide awake...that was the worst pain I ever felt, though it only lasted for like 10-15 seconds. He actually set it wrong (lovely), so I had general anesthesia, and they set it right (non-surgical). Then, I was in a car accident years later. Was in the back of an NYC cab, and the cab ran a red light, and crashed into a lamppost...got me a nice concussion. So I know what pain feels like, which makes me fairly confident I can deal with this upcoming pain (at least the first horrible week/2 weeks).

I've noticed that I'm particularly nervous about this at night. But then again, everything seems much worse at night. Sometimes when I wake up in the middle of the night to take a piss (which I do fairly often), I think to myself "things like this that I take for granted are not going to be fun while doing LL." Nevertheless...having experienced the extreme disappointment in myself (and the notion of dealing with height disphoria the rest of my entire life) for missing the last date I had, I don't want that to happen again. I genuinely feel I'll be fine once it's over and done with...I just need to get there lol  :D

although surgery is scary in each and every case, pain killers do help quite a bit. Also the body does adjust itself somewhat to prolonged periods of pain. Then again, EACH CASE is different.

Thanks man. I'm fairly confident I can deal with the pain, especially because I know that after 2 weeks it somewhat subsides, and because I will be keeping my eyes on the prize...being taller!

I feel that I just need to get over the initial nerves leading up to the surgery and get over the first large bump...the surgery itself. Once it's a done deal, I feel I'll be ok. But I'd be lying if I didn't say I'm nervous about it, especially at night. During the day I'm 100% gung 'ho about it and not nervous at all...but at night lying in bed, the nerves really set in.

There's a Russian saying, "mornings are wiser than evenings".  Maybe try keeping that in mind when those nerves hit you after dark.

I REALLY like this one. Thank you MDoW!

I feel like every day during the day, I'm totally fine. Just leaving my apartment and walking to the train/commuting to work underscores how much I feel I need to do LL. Even my boss at work fully supports me (and I'm sure even he would come visit me at home and at the hospital).

But man, at night, things just seem a whole lot worse. But I think that's just in general - whether it's physical pain, mental pain, nerves, etc. I will definitely keep this quote in mind when I start overthinking after dark :)

No pain, no gain  ;)

This is also very true, my friend. How can I expect to get my dream height without a little pain along the way?
