LON Femur VS Precise 2; Is There A Clear Winner?
« on: June 17, 2021, 09:40:37 PM »

Having spoke with patients who have utilised both I now thought it would be useful to zero in on these two particular methods as they are more affordable and patients do seem to achieve their goals, particularly with LON Femur.

I will state what I believe best represents the strengths and weaknesses of the two from my what I am aware off, hoping to create a solid reference point. For those who are actively going through or have competed their LL with either please do add and post your thoughts. Every comment helps.  :)

LON Femur
+ Full weight bearing during distraction with aid of walker
+ 3/4 months fixator removal patient can "walk" and rehab almost immediately.
+ Consolidate quicker due to weight bearing
+ Price
+ Reliable method
+ Complications seem manageable

- Scar tissue at pin site location; possible reduction of ROM long term
- Hernia at pin sites (seems rare)
- Joint contracture/knee
- Real pain and constant discomfort
- Sleep Issues
- Pin site infections and personal hygiene
- 3 x surgery

Precise 2
+ Internal nail safety reverse feature
+ Depending on nail size and patients weight movement with walker possible.
+ Improvements with sleep, hygiene and general comfort throughout distraction
+ Price
+ Conceal/Hide LL
+ 2 x surgery
+ Complications of surgery and infection reduce

- Weight bearing issues potentially wheel chair bound throughout LL entirety
- Increase the risk of alignment matters
- Price higher then LON
- Nail break (seems rare)
- Consolidation ranges approx 6-10months

No good doctor in the west recommends the use of LON for femurs. There is just one surgeon in recent times who has taken up extreme and cringey marketing tactics to promote LON femurs and I wouldn't trust their marketing material. They conveniently hide scars, knee ROM and long term recovery.

Fair enough. Since I have been on this forum I don’t believe I have read a long term patient status of Lon femur, specifically focusing on knee ROM etc

What are the opinions on the full weight bearing capacity with LON considering you can not usually do this with P2. Surely this should not be overlooked as you are essentially saving time right?

So you want to get back to normal life faster where normal life is having less ROM and terrible scars and scar tissue where the pins cut through?

I agree, I doubt anyone would knowingly sign up for this but I think the issue is that the pain levels are widely posted however all of the above is not widely emphasised.

Thank you for the comparison! I would like to ask you two questions. Is it common to have permanent knee pain after Lon surgery? Does it depend on the skill of the surgeon?(Like if I can avoid permanent knee pain if I choose Dr. Lee)
