New to LL and am trying to educate myself on the downsides of this surgery before I get my hopes up. From what i've read some people have become borderline crippled and lost a good bit of strength and function in their legs after having LL. I'm just wondering what exactly is behind this? can it be prevented? can it be cured?

If you go with a good doctor and do internal nail for femur (tibia doesn’t matter method) this shouldn’t be a problem but mainly it is lengthening at a fast rate than recommended (more than 1mm per day) over lengthening the safe limit (5-6cm for tibia and 8 for femur). Many people who have external femurs like myself have a higher risk because the pins go through soft tissue it usually isn’t a problem. Another big factor is not doing physical therapy and exercising. Those are the main big ones.

Tibia external TSF 10-2024, Assayag (Usa). In progress.
If considering external femurs please change your mind

I've never heard of someone being borderline crippled, unless the surgeon really messed up or the person just finished lengthening.
