Stryde return delayed 18-24 months
« on: May 22, 2021, 11:11:57 PM »

Just thought I would give you guys an update I received from a surgeon. I consulted with Debiparshad a while ago so I receive email updates from time to time and he sent me one stating that his sources in Nuvasive have informed him that they will be set to announce that Stryde will not return for 18-24 months at the earliest. You can also see the update on his Instagram page. This is bad news but useful for anyone who is waiting out for Stryde, unfortunately it will not be an option for the foreseeable future.

Two years is a long time to wait if someone was planning on this soon.

I feel bad for those who waited on the brief return.  I felt like I was being hasty setting a precise 2.2 surgery date this June, but unfortunately it was clearly the lucky decision.

This is big news considering there was talk from of Stryde returning in Q3 this year. Great news for Dr Betz though.

Especially considering how few options are available. The only weight bearing nails are the Betz and Guichet nails. Precise 2.2 leaves you dependant on a wheelchair and walker for months and external fixation for femurs has its own issues.

I think means that lysis is a problem after all and they have to mend the nail. That could mean a full phase 3 trial and FDA approval and then CE, MHRA approval.

Given this news, I think we should create a topic with current available options and the pros and cons of each method to help prospective LLer’s choose. I might look into doing this if anyone is interested.

I disagree, I think the next best thing is frames or LATN in the tibia.

It would appear so. The Betzbone does have its disadvantages and the hospital in St Ingbert they had to relocate to because of covid isn't said to be the best, but in my mind weight-bearing as well as the experience of the surgeon trumps all.

How is the next best thing not Precice 2.2?

It comes down to what you are able to tolerate during the lengthening process but Precise 2.2 does not allow you to fully weight bear until months 4 or 5 when there is sufficient callous growth so to some people including myself that isn’t a suitable method for bilateral cosmetic lengthening. I think people underestimate the importance of weight bearing and I’m not even referring to being able to walk around on the nails - that’s less important. To me, the biggest advantage of a weightbearing nail is being able to do basic things like brush your teeth, stand in the shower, walk to the fridge without the fear of your nail snapping in half or relying on a walker for 5 months. With Precise this these tasks aren’t possible unassisted and it’s tougher to promote bone growth when you can’t weight bear as well. Again it all comes down to lifestyle and what you can individually tolerate but personally, if I couldn’t weight bear I feel I would have become so frustrated and stopped lengthening at 5cm to just go back to normal activities.

That being said Precise 2.2 with current situation is definitely a valid option and I understand why people would go that route also.

I am thinking about doing 5 cm first and then after 8-12 months gap rebreaking and doing 3 cm femur. I think this path is better for people who don't want to wait for 2 years.

Keep in mind that it is in Debiparshad's (and other surgeon's) best interest to tell people it will take longer than it will. They have businesses built on CLL, after all -- so it is in their best interest to start selling precice ASAP.

With that being said, I don't see how it would realistically take longer than 12 months, if their initial timeframe was only ~5 months (from Feb to July).

You can't rush your health.

Well, no. They'd have a much higher demand for business if Stryde was available. If they wanted to simply get people to commit to CLL and pay a deposit, they would lie and say Stryde is coming back soon (like some other doctors did).

You missed the point entirely and your presumptions are egregious.

If they lie and say Stryde is available when it clearly isn't, anywhere, that could cause them to tarnish their reputation entirely. Deposits (which may vary) are not equal to people scheduling and undergoing surgeries, which are generally paid in full right before their operation.

Cyborg interviewed Paley on this. As far as I can recall Paley said that he does not expect it to be back until 2022, but you can infer from the way he talks and how unsettled he is that it will likely be longer than that. You can watch the interview on YouTube.

If they officially stated 18-24 months, realistically speaking it probably means it's gonna take the full 24 months.

Furthermore, all the LL doctors in the world are gonna try to order the Stryde nails when it's back, we're looking at another year of backorders + delivery time + consultation etc before the surgery can be done.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but we're not likely to able to do Stryde for the next 3 years.  :-X

I think so too. Waiting for stryde doesn't make sense anymore.
