Tips for someone about to do tibia legthening with LON?
« on: August 17, 2020, 01:27:03 AM »

I've have noted down a few things that past LL patients have said helped made their recovery easier and comfortable but what are some other tips that you would give to a someone about to do tibia lengthening?

The things that I've noted down so far are

- Laptop stool
- Pants that open sideways
- Pillows to make yourself more comfortable
- Stretch and walk every day

If you have trouble walking, at least stand.  For a long time every day.  I saw patients with pain and stiffness and other mobility issues, and they stopped even doing that.  They just lay in bed getting depressed after a while.  So mental toughness is important.

I don't know what a laptop stool is.  I always used a tray table, the kind usually used for eating in bed; I'd eat breakfast, wipe it off, then my laptop would go on it.  And you can put the legs of your wheelchair up, put your pillow(s) on top of them, and then put the tray table on top of the pillows in order to sit in your wheelchair with raised, straight legs.  It's good to alternate between bent and straight legs frequently.

A bamboo back scratcher.  Not necessarily for scratching anything, but they're great for grabbing or touching things that are just barely out of reach, like light switches or drawer handles.  Sometimes small movements are a lot of work and pain.

Sleep is your friend and pain is the enemy of sleep.  Bring some sleeping pills in case you're going to a doctor that doesn't prescribe them.

Clothing appropriate for the weather not just when you arrive but when you're scheduled to leave in case you have a hard time finding any.  Not sure where you're going and whether it's far from home or not.  Beijing got surprisingly cold toward the end.

Get this plastic cover thing for showering.

https://www.amazon.com/Water-Proof-Shower-TKWC-Inc/dp/B07F17YKV8/ref=pd_lpo_121_t_0/136-5709846-4298005?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07F17YKV8&pd_rd_r=bad5c72e-500f-4e8f-8ae7-93f7873d55ef&pd_rd_w=C5S4b&pd_rd_wg=K0RQ6&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=6H02X1FFYMANAPKNW1EN&psc=1&refRID=6H02X1FFYMANAPKNW1EN

You can find it on any online shopping website, not just amazon. Since I live in Asia I got mine off one of the ecommerce websites here.

For me at least this was super useful when showering. Just make sure you don't rip it when you put it on and off.

One of mine got ripped when I was close to removing the EF which was annoying.

Depends on how soon the quarantine opens up. Hopefully within this year.

What are some signs are I should be wary of that could mean that something is wrong or about to go terribly wrong? You're telling me that I should stand even if it hurts to walk but when do I know when to stop and not exert myself? Also are you supposed to be wheelchair bound during the entire lengthening phase?
