Wanting to do 5.5 cm (Paley)

I've seen many comments in posts contrasting doing 8CM to 5CM, and how people would likely recover faster/have less risk involved. I understand that the longer the lengthening the more risk of complications but in terms of recovery, regaining prior athleticism and other long term issues, do those 3 CM really make that much of a difference?
