I did LL with Dr. Betz back in 2012 and took my nails out about in the end of 2013. I did 9,5cm on the femurs (9cm on the left, 10cm on the right); I went from 5'5''to 5'9''. I had the 11mm Betzbone (the older model) and had to use crutches during the whole process until 9,5 months after surgery. My weight was 62kg back then (I'm 74kg now).

I know some people had problems with Betz but for me the LL was spectacular. I hated to be on crutches but the extra 10cm changed my life for the better. My only regret is that I didn't do this 10 years before.

I've recovered 99% and I'm as fit and muscular as i was before (and my tights are epic now...lol). The 1% that I didn't totally recovere was part of my flexibility, but I had an above average flexibility so it doesn't bother me much.

Having said that, if Stryde is really weight bearing without crutches maybe that's a better option now.
It would be nice to have Betz as the surgeon and Stryde as the nail.

The latest BetzBone is full weight bearing. You can walk with crutches the day of surgery as long as you don’t bounce. I am in the consolidation phase now and my xrays look perfect, according to Betz and also my primary care physician I’ve been seeing for over ten years. I repeat, the BetzBone is full weight bearing. You just cannot jump or run until the consolidation phase and X-rays showing sufficient consolidation.

That's great to now inchesmatter! I'm happy for you, it seems you had a much better time than I did during my femur LL. :)

Would you mind answering some questions?

1) Did you length the femur or the tibia?

2) How much did you length?

3) How much did you weight then? Do you know how many kilos the new Betzbone can stand?

3) Did you use the current 12.5 Betzbone nail?

4) Did you see any Betz tibia patient walking without crutches there? Or is that only for femur patients?

5) Do you know if Betz considered using Stryde?

I'm torn between Stryde in the US or going back to Germany with Betz for my tibias.
I'm leaning towards Betz because I know the drill already and had great results with him, but Stryde seems very appealing.

It depends a lot on your initial proportions.

I'm not disproportional at all with 10cm in my femurs. If anything, I was disproportional before and I look much better now.
I was 165cm but I'm muscular and have broad shoulders, even broader than some friends who are 175cm to 180cm.
So I looked a little bit odd before.

Now at 174,5cm I look much more proportional and I still have broader shoulders than the average natural 175cm guy).

People recommend not to exceed 8cm on the femurs because the recovery gets much harder after that.
I can confirm that my left leg (9cm) healed WAY before my right leg (10cm). A brutal difference.

1. I lengthened the femurs.
2. 7.6cm, exactly 3 inches.
3. I weighed 170 pounds. I don’t know how much the Betzbone can withstand, but it is much more than my body weight.
4. I am using the latest Betzbone, the Betzbone II, 12mm.
5. Yes, I saw a tibia patient when I was there walking on crutches.
6. I have no idea if Betz has ever considered using Stryde.

I am feeling better by the day now and have zero regrets!

Thanks for the answers! I'm happy your recovery is doing well and you have no regrets. I know exactly the feeling! :D

I'm also really happy about what you said in item 3: Betzbone withstanding 170pounds. That's definitely more than the old Betzbone.  It makes me more confident about going back for tibia.
I actually have a consultation with Betz next week about this.

The tibia is a more complicated surgery with a much slower recovery. The surgery takes longer to perform, too. The fibula is too small to anchor with screws so it just dangles. Ask him about “ballerina feet”. Femurs are much easier, and even they are not easy.

I know, I had some fellow LLérs doing tibia when I was there in 2012. It's definitely a harder surgery with more complications. Although the clicking was easier for them.
