Do you get persistent knee pain from internal femurs?

Do you get persistent knee pain from internal femurs?

If you do LL on both segments, will you most likely get persistent knee pain?

Is there a difference in persistant knee pain between internal tibias and external tibias?

I can only reply concerning myself.. I did internal femurs.

In my case: No. There's no persistent pain of any sort.

I only get a bit tired after standing up or walking for a long time.

They can put the internal rods in through the top of the femur (by your hips) instead of through the bottom (by the knee) so it's not an issue.

Exactly. So I have no knee pain.

Even though they placed the internal rods from my knee, I still have no problem.

This whole "knee pain" thing is the new hype for some reason. It's so overrated.

You know, when scientific studies of even non-lengthening (that is, simply post-trauma) patients with IM tibia nails show that far more than half of them experience knee pain for years after, there might be something to it... Dr. Franz also seemed to support this and admitted no one knows for sure what causes it. It's good to hear anecdotes of the cases where it doesn't happen (maybe because of femurs instead of tibias), like in yours, but that doesn't mean it's not a valid concern and only "overrated hype". It's another risk factor prospective patients want to know the facts about.

Agree that the risk of knee pain in Femur is not an issue when it's done via hip insertion.   Can't say the same for Tibia as one study claims 73% rate of knee pain.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18758282

All enrolled patients were initially acutely treated with locked intramedullary nailing of their tibia.  Of the questionnaire group (n = 56), only 15 (26.7%) denied knee pain with any activity whereas 41 patients (73.2%) had at least moderate knee pain.

Dameon,

Does the study specify that the knee pain was permanent?

Edit: Sorry, I read it now. Long-term study, got it. Very interesting, thanks for sharing.

I did internal femur. And never experienced knee pain. However after a long walk or a long run, I mean more than 5km, I feel some kind of hip disconfort, but it can be usual even for those who have never had LL.
