Weightbearing During LL (Moved Thread)
« on: April 09, 2014, 12:24:50 PM »

just read through most of this diary... I'm glad I did... I thought I was being a complete wuss because I don't wanna get out of bed, and I see in china, they didnt even have you try to walk or stand up for 2 weeks.... In russia, it's very different. They had me walking within 2 days, and   it got worse, hurt like hell!!!!!! I haven't even used a wheelchair once, just a walker....  I think i'm going to take it easier, even though the nurses here are insisting i get up and walk a lot...   They don't understand that making me walk when I'm in  pain is making me dread getting up at all

It's surprising how different doctors have such different opinions about what patients should do during the lengthening phase.  I heard that they used to force people to exercise in Beijing, but dropped that policy shortly before I got there.

I think the extensive walking made out to be imperative in Russia is over the top. From what I've witnessed, it really doesn't seem to help much. Standing in place for a few minutes seems to have the same effect on physical condition, if there is any effect at all. From what I've experienced in myself and the others in India, wearing the sandals for the whole length of the day (with two or so 15 min interval breaks) seems to have the most beneficial effect on preventing ballerina. The two guys here who walked prodigiously still had quite severe ballerina (one did lengthen 10cm, however). I was the biggest sandal wearer and my ballerina is minimal after close to 6cm. I never walked once and stood maybe 5 times for 5 min.

I agree about the walking here...... I think it may be harmful in fact, it certainly has made me dread  standing up now because of how bad it was walking a few days after the surgery...   I apologize for hijacking the thread

I dont think walking is done mainly to prevent ballerina, its used to increase blood flow in the legs which makes you heal faster from the surgery, and the bone regens faster too. Also if you dont move or put weight on the legs at all the muscles will weaken alot more.

For me, walking actually feels "good" because i become less stiff as the blood flow and synovial fluids increase as a result of movement. the sensations and uncomfortable feelings in the legs which i get after laying still for too long (which i think is because of muscle atrophy) goes away for a long while after a walking session as well.

I think in the early stages after surgery you shouldnt walk to much, i only walked to the bathroom and back about 2 or 3 times a day at the clinic. The nurses didnt bother me much about it, they just mentioned it a few times, after that i had my own responsibility if i wanted to do it or not, of course i clicked the alarm button when i was about to move so they where aware in case i fell or something.

After 2 weeks it got a lot better for me, and by that time you should probably start to walk more than in the beginning.

For me, walking never felt good while I was doing it, but I certainly felt good after and always vowed to walk more often (I often had to break that vow though)  ;D

Did you do LON or LATN? if you did LON, maybe the reason it didnt feel good was because of the internal nail while you lengthened. Otherwise maybe it is because you didnt do it often enough so each time you did you where very stiff, just my guess   :) Might just be difference of our fixators also
