8cm With Externals Only (NO LON)
« on: March 29, 2014, 09:57:15 PM »

If I was looking to gain 8cm with external only

"
When only an external fixator is used, the fixator needs to remain in place for both the distraction and consolidation phases. If
the fixator were removed at the end of the distraction phase, the new bone would collapse and reshorten. Therefore, the
external fixator needs to remain in place until the regenerated bone appears solid enough on the radiographs (x-rays). At that
point, the device can be removed. Often, a cast is applied to temporarily protect the bone from breakage for an additional short
time. The total time in the external fixator can be estimated to be approximately 1 month for each centimeter lengthened in
children and 1.5 to 2 months or longer per centimeter in adults.
"

3 months for lengthening
16 months for consolidation

TOTAL TIME is 19 months?

Actually the 3 for lengthening is included in the 16 for consolidation, so it's 16 months total.  But keep in mind that's the upper end of the estimated range and people might finish sooner, in many cases much sooner.

Read RGKey's diary...he did externals only in Russia. Did 9cm and it took him 10mos. I can't say if he's the average case or an exception to the rule,  but 16 mos total is frames for 8cm seems like way too long.

Rgkey walks for hours everyday, sometimes 6-8 hours because his doctor recommend  walking to help the bone consolidate faster.   The difference between fast and slow consolidation is exercising of your legs.     You don't need a physio,  just do alot of stretching and walking on your own.   Good diet and stop smoking helps too.

If @RGKEY could comment here it would be appreciated. My question was regarding the of the 16 months was if it was from start to complete removal of the frames.

Yes! Walk 24/7 if you can!!)) But only with Ilizarov! !! Any other device will depend on what your doctor tells you. Not all devices can handle all your weight. Ilizarov devices can hold about 2 or 3 times your weight. And the good thing with ilizarov is that if you break pins they can be replace. With thI I don't mean to say that is easy but I can say that is possible and walking is the best thing for bone regeneration ask any doctor))))

Thanks for your helpful words @RGKEY  ;) I have read all your post and your partly my inspiration for looking into the externals. Do you have any idea if I did get them when I could go home? Or would it be required to stay in Russia or whever I get them for the whole lengthening+consolidation?
