13 cm in one year LON (6.5 femur + 6.5 tibia)
« on: January 23, 2017, 10:36:58 AM »

Is it  a realistic goal to do LL 13 cm in one year? Half and half between  femur and tibia obviously. By in a year, I  meann walking doinng nnprmal things 100 %. Not running, jumping, lifting, endurance, etc.

Please explain why if you can. If I do LON, I can get out of frames quicker and consolidate. Maybe 4 months after tibia surgery (frames will be off) I perform femurs as well.. Not disagreeing just want to know flaws in my plan

I know dr paley offers femur and tibia lengthening in two surgerys three weeks apart from eachother but it'll total to 10 cm 5+5 and is hella painful. as for walking in a year its possible but ull be walking funny for awhile and as for LON i dunno most havent done LON in femurs and most wouldnt do externals in femurs at that

Thank to everyones input so far. I understand external femurs are nearly impossible. Thats why I chose LON for a medium amount like 6.5cm. What I dont get is why I wouldnt be able to walk normal at least.

My plan is 6.5 tibia + femur. Thats about 3 months in a frame for each segment. Then I will take a 3 to 4 month break after my tibia frames are removed and have femur surgery.

You still need an external device to lengthen. LON just means that a nail will be inserted into the bone so you lengthen along that axis. It cuts down on healing time because you can begin walking before the bone is fully consolidated. So having said that, you will have to experience a painful femur surgery from any doctor that would allow this

As for why you won't be able to walk sooner. Muscle recovery takes longer than bone recovery due to flexibility issues. When doing two segments there is an even greater stress put on the body because some of those muscles and nerves work with both your lower and up portions so there is twice as much stretching required.

Thank you ub40!
I dont have time to wait more than a year for a 2nd surgery, so I am willing to settle for down to 10 cm. But how long could consolidation take. Also I forgot to mention Im 5'8

1.5-2 months for each cm depending on the limb. tibia's recover slower than femurs and ur 5'8 why ur in such a rush  wear lifts in the mean time. and also, the 1.5-2 months is generally speaking and consolidation is especially individual amongst other things u could have good or bad bone growth you'll never know that till you get LL. but if u eat a good diet in preparation and during it'll help

So if I do femurs 6.5 it would take 6.5 months to fully heal? Why couldn't I just wait 3 or 4 months after frame removal. That is about 6 or 7 months alone then instead of waiting the rest of the full uear I go in to the second surgery right after my 5 or 6 month mark of the entire process. Then after my femur frame removal at my 8 or 9 month mark
I spend the last 3 months of the year doing to PT to try to walk

who said u had to be a year in frames but in most cases the dr does that to prevent bone non union depending on callus formation though the dr will give u the green light for frame removal earlier than expected or u might have to wait awhile thats why i said it's individual also lengthening period dictates how much longer ud be in frames some docs do 1mm a day other lower. and what did u mean by spending the last 3 months doing PT? cause you need to do PT during lengthening

Not in frames. But the first comment said that walking normal after 13 cm lengthening in one year is unrealistic. I wanted to know why of I can get out of frames so quickly. And do "more intensive" pt while frames are off to help my muscles adjust quicker.

he probably meant you cant do two segments in a year's time with both segments being consolidated
