Removing Rods
« on: November 25, 2016, 04:25:15 AM »

Is it possible to remove rods or do only the nails come out? I'm looking for a method where I will have no metal left in my body after surgery. Which procedure is ideal for this?

Your only option would be external fixation, the process finishes with the removal of frames.

You can try external only but be very aware that consolidating in external frames is a long long process that will test you mentally like very few other procedures. For every cm you do you can be looking at 1 month to 6 weeks sometimes longer for consolidating. Wave goodbye to showering properly and sleeping for anymore than 3 hours at a time. Stretching and walking in external frames is also far far harder

God, another "specialist".

You can remove the rods some time after full consolidation.

Letting him know what he's in for! There's a reason externals are avoided at al costs by most people because it's by far the least comfortable of the methods!

External fixation is uncomfortable but has improved, now is lighter and not painful.

If someone can commit to be there a year than full externals might not be bad but those of us who want to go home after distraction will have a hard time explaining to family and friends with those frames on our legs. Without the frames we can at least invent that we had a accident.

You can just claim you broke your tibias badly in a fall, these frames are used for bad breaks as well.

The main issue is psychologically if you can handle a year in frames, sleep is badly disrupted and its still painful regardless of new techniques. The frames also make stretching difficult as the pins tether your muscles. Washing is also very difficult in frames and muscle atrophy is worse.

If you can avoid getting this operation full stop and accept things the way they are that's better still. There's a reason very very few people actually go ahead and do this operation it's one of the toughest things you will ever do
