Why don't doctors give out free cosmetic lengthening surgeries?
« on: November 21, 2016, 10:47:26 PM »

There are plenty of doctors who will perform a free surgery from time to time on someone who can't afford it. But they will only do it for those with a deformity of some kind or someone who has been crippled in an accident. Why will none of these doctors perform a free surgery on a short person? Clearly the quality of life will be better at the end of it. Why the humongous double standard?

Depends on how short person are we talking about.

People with dwarfism can get refunded LL, at least here.

In my country it's because being short is not considered a disability.
Regular short people (not dwarfs) are physically healthy and that's all that matters from a medical point of view. And mental issues are not physical.
No one can see the daily and social handicaps short people (especially males) have to deal with.

That's because these handicaps are not universal for every short person. There are indeed short men content with their existence. Also, LL is not an answer for a societal problem. If everyone would get it done, there would still be tall and short people. LL is a solution for a very individual, very specific problem. Not for every short person.

They don't give it out because it's only in  hole borderline 3rd world countries that you can get away with taking a persons money, damaging them and then not get sued. If they performed this in the UK or most western countries for cosmetic purposes on NHS when it inevitably goes wrong and someone ends up crippled or unable to walk properly they get taken to court. Simply put its far too risky for them. That being said Ive seen some western countries do it for people on the grounds of mental health issues from short stature.

Really? Which countries?

Ive heard of it being done in the UK on two occasions however the results of both surgerys looked questionable

I'm sure I read of it being done in other countries as well
