How will being muscled affect my lengthening experience?
« on: November 14, 2016, 05:17:01 PM »

I'm quite muscled particularly around the leg area. How will this affect the surgery? Should I expect more pain?
I'm only going to do 4cm on my femurs with Dr. Guitchets internal nail, maybe 5? but I'll have to do a mockup. 4cm is my goal. I'm currently 169cm, 4cm would get me to 173 and I might consider a second surgery on my tibias if the first goes well. Ideally I'd like to reach 175cm but ideals aren't always realistic.

5cm is very realistic for a nail in the femur. In my experience and hearing others', muscles especially quads deplete immediately after surgery. Having good arm strength and being fit weight wise is more important, I'd say.

5 cm in both femurs with G-nail is a waste of money for me, at least 6. If you plan to do tibias in future do just 4 cm, 5 or more starts to cause problems.

You worry to much about proportions if your going for 4-5 cm.

You're right, I know I worry a fair bit about proportions.

I think 6 will become fairly noticeable for me in comparison to 4-5. 6cm would also leave a big imbalance between my femur and tibia.

Depends

Muscles atrophy very very fast when you are essentially bedridden. Big difference vs stopping training vs stopping training and lying in a bed for 4-12 months. Muscles can atrophy in a bed ridden state in 4 days. The more muscle you have the more you will lose.

I lost 7.5" on my thighs and 4" on calves but I was abnormally muscular.

Bigger muscles once you hit 3-4cms will get pissed off and resist lengthening however the tendons are the major concern. If you are physically very strong you likely have thick tendons, my tendons are roughly 3-4 times thicker than the average mans I can tell you now they don't like getting stretched.

You will lose a lot of muscle, and if lengthening with the precice, your muscle may affect the lengthening by getting in the way occasionally. Your overall strength will be useful in your day to day however.

How does the Precice affect the muscle's reaction to lengthening?

The precise motor is powered by a magnet and you must get the ERC machine within 2 inches of the rod for it to work. My legs were large enough they insisted I  have someone pushdown on the ERC during my turns to ensure proper functioning. Very unlikely you'll need that. Unless you weigh 200lbs or more safe bet you can do your own turns just being sure to push down a bit.

Do 6-7 cm femur and quit this crap surgery. You think its better to do both legs?! you will waste a lot of your lifetime with two surgeries. if you do 6-7 cm femur you will start running before you recover from your second surgery. Secondly Internal tibia is questionable, you may face permanent knee pain for ever. The positive thing is you will have a realistic goal, but wasting 2+ years, am sure when you perform the surgery you may change your mind about the second one. just do 6-7 cm femur and be happy, Good luck.

6-7cm looks absolute horrendous on my femurs proportion wise there are also other reasons I will not do all on one segment one reason being when you kneel, squat and even sit there is a 6-7cm difference between the bones. Mechanically speaking that is terrible.
