Best Length to Optimize Recovery
« on: October 19, 2016, 01:00:00 AM »

Hey guys, I am exploring the concept of LL, but only in the capacity that it would be safe for my body. I am willing to take less if it means a better recovery.

This is a question that I posted on a diary elsewhere, and am moving it to create a new post.
Any insightful opinions will be appreciated:

We can all agree that there is inherent risk associated with this procedure.

The one problem I think people make is desiring longer lengths than their bodies can handle. I can certainly see why people would 'stretch' for more, but therein lies the risk/reward.

The question I would like to explore is:

What is the # of cm an average healthy male can lengthen his femurs and then achieve 80-90% mobility AND be pain free within 2 years after the procedure.

I realize this is not admissible medical evidence, but opinions are all we have at this point, since we can not always trust the surgeons opinion.

Post a number from 0-10 cm.

ps. Do not take into account - 'is it worth it?'
I am only exploring what we think the body can handle.

Dr.Birkholtz limits are pretty accurate.

6cm femur, 5cm tibia. Same thing i got from my private orthopedic surgeon but he doesn't perform CLL.

5cm femur low risk. 6-8 medium risk, above high risk

7 cm in femur looks good, you will not regret it in the future and say i hope i did more. and yeah, avoid external as much as you can

The more I read, I have changed my thought from 4 to 5 cm.

I also think the lengthening rate is under-appreciated. A rate of 0.75 cm seems tolerable for the body, and is not terribly long for a 5 cm procedure.

As for regrets - I would rather set a smart goal and be proud to achieve it, than set a slightly higher goal and regret that I went too far.

Say I lengthen 5cm which is 2 inches roughly with guitchet internal femurs, can I be at a point in my life where I can completely forget I ever had limb lengthening. Also, will i still run the risk of arthritis and knee pains etc in future with 5cm.

Permanent knee pain is mostly associated with internal tibia lengthening since the rod is inserted through it.

I am trying to figure out this exact question. My thought is that as long as the rate of lengthening is slow enough - 0.75 mm per day, and you do not exceed 5 cm, I think you can get back to full function
