How much height can one gain before they run into serious problems?

I'm hoping to gain 3 inches with LL, but idk if that's too much...

3 inches is fine with internals, it's a bit much with externals.

why external allow less gain ?

Imo, safest max gain would be 6 cm external tibiae, 6.5 cm internal femurs for 5 inches total, assuming you go to a reputable doctor. But like with any surgery there are risks, and the more surgeries you do the more risks you are taking.
