I am French but I went in Germany a couple of times , I don't think they are really tall, at 183 cm I felt average even among young men.
In some areas they might be tall.

The germans are noticably taller than the french though, I´ve been to both countries several times and I can tell you that the french are on the lower end of the european scale when it comes to height.
Non the less, 180 is what many consider "normal" so below that you are somewhat short. A friend of mine was called dwarf by a girl a couple of weeks ago and he is 175.

Must have been a tease. No way a 175 guy would be considered a dwarf or extremely short (even in Germany)

Of course it was exaggerated, yet it shows that many people would consider you short if you are under 180 (my whole family does!). It all comes down to the second digit, if it´s a "7" you´re short and if it´s an "8" or higher you´re fine. So even at

are you the shortest male in your family? If so I can relate

It´s the same thing in the US where 6ft is considered ideal by many women, although 5´11 is not much shorter but it sounds way less appealing if you compare them.
I somehow posted it before it was finished.
Edit:
Yes I´m probably 10-12cm´s below my families average height for males, and my mother is the only woman in my family that is shorter than me. Even she is only 3cm´s shorter, so if she wears shoes with thicker soles we are pretty much on the same level.

stop saying french are short just because it makes you feel better
I'am 183 cm at my lowest, i went in Germany where i just felt average , when i compare the youngs in germany and in France, the difference is not so perceptible.
The average for young german is 180.5 cm, the average for french between 18 years old and 65 years old is 176 cm, which means the average height for french young men must be 178-179 cm.I correlated those statistics with dating websites and you know what ?I found similar results
Besides , i have graduated from one of the best engineering school in France, i am a good observer, i know what i am talking, german are just a bit taller.
At 183 cm, i often feel dead average with other white young men, so i'm sorry for you, but even in France you're not above average

i went in israel when i was a child, i visited a university , i was only 140 cm but i remember that everyone were much shorter than me.

Do you get it?It's easy to write a fake testimonial, i'm giving real fact, the average height for young french men is not below 177 cm, especially in Paris, just like the average height for young german is not above 182 cm.

this is for you, as you can see the average height for 18-22 years old conscripts was 176.6 cm in Paris, 25 years ago...

I never said they are short, I said the germans are "noticeably taller" , which is true. A 2-3cm difference is a noticeably amount (for someone who pays attention to this like me), so don´t twist my words.
In addtition to this saying france is on the lower end of the european scale is true as well, why arguing?
178 seems like a plausible average compared to the 176,6 25 years ago. That would be a difference of 2,6cm´s (180,6 in urban germany) which correlates exactly with what I´ve said.

It is difficult to calculate an average
but all that I can say that French 1m77 is a median height a lot of people did and that's probably the fairest average

I went in Norway and norwegians are not so tall, like german i think

lol, a true 175 ?
I have a friend who is 5-10 cm shorter than me and said he is 172-73 (my height)

I do not think the French are so small on a European scale
already it is taller than all the countries further south and east, taller than the Russian
it was the same height as the Belgians or the British, and if they claim to be taller they lie
i have belgian blood
i travel in Norway, in UK, in Swiss and i dont think they are taller or maybe 1-2 cm

You what?!

At university I lived with two 6ft people, one 6'4 and one 6'6... Two of my close friends from where I grew up are 6'2...

I think you answer your own question in your first post, they want to be that 6ft+ and be heigher than everyone else and not the short guy or the regular guy.

it's funny to see that this forum live only with giants
men are 7', women are 6'2
6'6 is very rare, I think you overestimate their height

My cousin is 6'7. He's been measured in front of me, so I know I am right.

I don't know if I have EVER seen someone else as tall as him...ever.

But I am in the USA, the land of midgets apparently. We only average 5'10 and not 5'11 like the Germans after all...

Regardless age or ethnicities , the average height in the US is only 5'9" .
Americans are pretty short , except in some regions I guess, I guess that in predominantly white and wealthy regions the average is certainly higher

Not quite.

Average is 5'9.5 for all, 5'10 for whites.

Blacks, asians, natives, and hispanics, are mostly all shorter.

I'm a white boy.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_height

Look for "non-hispanic white americans 20-39"

Edit: The "american male average is 5'9" comes from a CDC study done in the 1980's. My local ortho had it in his desk. We had to google the newest info to show he was using out-dated data.

Also, my anecdotal evidence for the day...

I frequent the "wealthier" areas of the US, since ya know, I'm wealthier...and I believe the average is correct.

I'm 5'9 in boots and most men are within a couple inches either way of me. Some short dudes, some tall dudes around, but average is as average does.
