Limb Lengthening on my 28th Birthday with Manish Dhawan in Delhi
« on: February 22, 2016, 12:32:18 AM »

It is midnight.  My surgery is 8 hours; ironically, the surgery is on my 28th Birthday, I am excited just to get this surgery over with, so I can start my life again.  Looking forward to chilling out as well,  I have been liking my experience in India thus far.  The people are cool, but annoying at times.  The girls really like white guys, so I have been taking full advantage of that since I got here.  First thing I did was to get on Tinder, and find myself a gf who can help me, and to have someone to chat. and so I don't get crazy blue balls.   I was successful and manage to form 2 relationships, and I am working on a few others.  Actually pay for Tinder don't just do the free version.  You get way way better results.  Also, going on dates, can be some what expensive....... If you make Rupees, lol  but if you make dollars, your dating bill just went way down.  I could easily spend $150 usd on dinner and drinks in US (silicon valley is crazy expensive).  Here its like 50.00 dollars.

The first month I was here, I was just going out, and trying to meet people. As well as look for places that can accomodate me while being in a wheel chair.  Luckily I found Phoenix off the forum, and have been staying with him, and I am basically just following his exact path, since all the leg work of doing research was done for me.  The only difference for me is that I am doing  LON, and he went with straight externals with TSF.  Basically, I didn't want to be in frames for  that long.  TSF is full weight bearing LON is not (WITH THE DOCTOR I AM USING SOME DOCTORS SAY OTHERWISE).  But I can still cuddle with chicks, once in consolidation, so take that TSF, something you can never beat!!! Joking aside that was the distinguishing factor for me.

A little advice for Americans,  don't over pack, don't over think it, the surgery is less expensive than you think, have a list of questions prepared for the doctors you visit.  The doctors here have so many patients, that you have to get them to talk, and pin them down with questions.  American doctors simply don't have as much patients, so we are used to getting swaddled, and comforted.  Get over that quick.  If you want cheaper housing than a hotel, that is very easy to find.  A hotel will be about 1500 to 2000 rupees per night, a place off airbnb is like half that if you are staying monthly, which you will be, and plus you get to chill with people every day.  And finding a place off Facebook by joining groups, such as south delhi flat and flatmates, or Just Talk, or South Delhi Flatmates and flats are even half of airbnb.    Trust me I know, Phoenix and I are living in an airbnb with a lift, a gym, a maid, a cook, and ironically the place we stay at is owned by a doctor, so you don't even have to go back to the hospital if you need a prescription refill because he will just fill it for you.  No its not like in the states where the hospital emails the prescription to a specific pharmacy.  You actually have to physically get it in hand and take it to the pharmacy.  Having the doctor as a land lord just passes a trip to the hospital.  Plus, comforting for me at least so I can have him take a look if my leg gets infected.  Don't worry so much about finding a place close to the hospital.  It really doesn't matter.  You will only be going to the hospital once ever two weeks, so the 2 Uber rides a month isn't worth busting your balls trying to find the perfect place right next to the hospital.  I don't even plan on going to the hospital much  once I am done growing because I hate waiting in lines.  I am just going to go to an x-ray place right down the street from the place I am staying, and just email the doctor the x-ray's.  Phoenix didn't even go see the doctor for 2 1/2 months during consolidation.  Don't even think about getting any phone service besides airtel, and or vodofone.  Trust me I made the mistake and went with Reliance.  Huge mistake.  Also, consider getting a mobile hot spot as well.  Their like 20 usd, but if you want to travel around a bit with your lap top, they are handy.  It is not like in the states where every where has free wifi. Plus, the hospital I am staying at does not have wifi, and I plan on working mobility so I will need it for that.  Also, if you don't negotiate everything you are just a foreign sucker.  Look at India as a giant negotiation table.  EVERYTHING is negotiable.  I went to the dentist, and got my teeth cleaned and two cavities filled.  He said 4000 inr and I said 3000, but only had 2750, he said ok, and I ended up saving 1250 inr just like that.  Trying doing that with your dentist in the States.  I used that money to go get and hour message, and a steam bath. haha

I word vomited this whole post, so forgive gramatical errors.  I did in fact spell  gramatical wrong on purpose just for a little humor.

It's funny you're doing the surgery on your birthday. I had mine the day after surgery. At least I had a cake while stuck on a hospital bed lol.

I suppose Phoenix is doing well considering you chose the same doctor. What other docs did you consult with while in Delhi?

Good luck with your surgery and lengthening process.

Informative and entertaining start to your diary. It seems that you have found the perfect accommodation for LL with Phoenix. I hope he's doing fine and it will be good if we could get an update from him. Anyway, I wish you all the best in achieving your goal. Enjoy your 28th birthday too :)

Telwar and the Dr. from India Spinal Surgeries.  Dr. Dhawan was more of a sure thing since I knew Phoenix was using him, and what really sold me on him is that Phoenix would complain that Dr. Dhawan was going to call him today, and how he trys to avoid him because Dhawan is always riding him telling him he needs to his exercises, telling him to walk, and lecturing him.  I thought this was funny and ironic and showed me that he is atleast easy to get a hold of post surgery, and showed he follows up with patients post surgery.

I spoke with Dr. Talwar who just pawned me off to another Dr. which I didn't find all that cool.  And I met with the guy from India spinal center, but he doesn't specialize in cosmetic LL, he does deformity correction.  I am paraphrasing his words.

When I went to Rockland, Dr Talwar wasn't there that day and the rep I had been in contact with had me speak to Dr Rajesh Verma. The way it's apparently set up there is that Dr Talwar is the orthopedics supervisor and he will be present during the surgery, but the main ones performing the lengthening, at least at the time I had the consultation, would primarily be Dr Verma (a spine surgeon) and Dr Gurdeep Singh Ratra (leg reconstruction being his primary focus according to his old website). Was either of the two the one Dr Talwar referred you to?

I believe Dr Raina is the main surgeon at ISIC. The clinic looks nice from the outside. What was the interior like and your overall impression of the doctor?

Going to a surgeon with years of reconstruction work under his belt is probably a safer bet than going to a surgeon who's doing cosmetic lengthenings more often than not, primarily because the reconstructive leg lengthening specialist will have encountered far more complications in his practice and have better experience in preventing or correcting them than a surgeon who mainly does cosmetic work. I know Dr Dhawan has done some cosmetic lengthenings before, but from what I saw his primary focus is on treating deformities and discrepancies as well.

How did your surgery go? And what did Dr Dhawan say when you told him you want to do 2.9 inches of lengthening with LON? When I consulted with him he told me that he'd be comfortable doing a max of 5 cm with LON but would be okay with letting me go 7 cm with hexapod externals.

Everything you said about Talwar seemed correct from what I heard after my consultation, and from what I experienced.  Talwar seemed salesy and I get so frustrated by doctors who try to sell me.  Don't sell me ,Tell me.  Dr. Raina didn't try to sell me at all he was pretty honest which I liked.  He said that Cosmetic is not his passion.  I asked him what the differences are between Lon or monorail.  He said that he doesn't do research, and then asked me what I have read.  I understand that doctors in the states are different from doctors in India.  Drs. don't have nearly as many patients so have more free time to do research.  Doctors in India are so busy with patients that they simply don't have as much free time in a day.  But that turned me off towards him.  And the fact that he didn't even know how much the surgery does, which was frightening to me because that showed me that he doesn't have a lot of experience because if you don't have rough estimates off the top of your head then you don't do the surgery much.

Surgery went off with out a hitch.  No problems much to speak of.  Day 3 was the first day I got swelling and that is only because I walked today. Dr. Dhawan said that is right around the max, but that we can go more if my body responds well.  And that is the approach I am taking.  I am just focusing on doing things right, and what ever my body gives me, then I will be happy with it.  Before I moved to India I felt short living in the US but after moving here I realized that I am not that short after all when compared to the rest of the world.  I plan on living in India for a few years now, so I am not going to damage my body for 9 to 10 cm because I will be 5'8" and that is just fine for India.

This is good info. Any chance you can take a pic of your frames later? Curious about Dr Dhawan's frame set up when doing LON.

Introduction: the beginning of my journey.

In the next six Journal update, I will try to provide the best advice I can give to prospective limb lengthening patients.  Most of the advice is not related to any Doctors, so please try not to ask me advice about doctors.  I used Dr. Dhawan, but it doesn't really matter what I have to say about a doctor or not or about a specific type of limb lengthening method because I assure you I am unqualified to give any kind of advanced or scholarly researched advice on best doctors or best methodologies.  What I can offer is advice from my personal experience.  These posts are aimed to offer advice in a logical order that follows my time line on my limb lengthening journey thus far, as well as be peppered with personal stories, where I have learned the hard way, or found the easy way before the hard way.  I only want to help people, so in your replies, I would appreciate non-critical, polite, and non political responses.  Thank you, and if you have any more questions please feel free to message me.

Preparations: Finding indian limb lengthening partners.
« Reply #11 on: February 28, 2016, 04:30:48 PM »

The most crucial thing for me was meeting up with Phoenix from the forum once I got here.  I do not speak Hindi, so that has been a tremendous help having a person help me when needing it, which was a bunch.  Phoenix also spent 5 years, in the US, so that has helped to understand one another.  When my cell phone would run out of minutes, and I was out partying, he would just call and have it refilled.  When I needed a uber or Ola cab driver, he would literally talk to the Taxi driver, to give him directions, every time I took a ride.  When I would want to negotiate the price of weed from a tuk tuk driver, I simply called Phoenix, and he talked the driver down from 1000 INR to 600 INR.  I have a lot of advice I would like a share, but for me the most crucial was finding someone off the forum, who is doing the surgery in the same city, meeting up with them, and using their research and living experiences to guide your actions is key.  NOT NECESSARILY the same doctor either.

If you can not find someone, from the forum, in the city in which you want to lengthen in.  Get on couchsurfing.com, create a profile and ask people to host you in the same city the doctor is in before you go to the country.  You can travel cheap this way, and people will bend over back wards to help you out, and will greatly enhance your travel experience vs. staying in a Hotel room by yourself.   And sometimes, the people hosting you, will also help to guide you in longer term living situation.  Ask your couch surfing hosts, if they are apart of any Facebook groups that has housing for expats, because not every country has, roomster, or craiglist to find roomies.  Staying in a hotel is boring, depressing, and expensive.  Reaching out to people on couch surfing before hand will be a good thing for your quality of life.  Who says limb lengthening had to be boring...

Once you get to Delhi: Build relationships and invest into health!
« Reply #12 on: February 28, 2016, 04:39:25 PM »

I said this a little bit in my first journal entry, so I won't touch on it much here.  This is more useful to those that want to do consolidation in India or whatever country they choose to lengthen.  Getting on Tinder Plus was crucial for me, not only as a way to meet women, but also as a way to meet people.  My Tinder dates would bring me to parties (3 parties in total initially), and/or invite me to go to the clubs (2 times)  Once at the party or the club, I immediately start talking and being friendly to other girls, and guys.  This had two effects, it broadened my networks of people, of women and men, and showed the Tinder dates, that I know how to talk to people. Grab Facebooks while there!  I planned on doing LON, so I won't be stuck in frames for a year, once I am out of frames and done growing I plan on being social again, so  these friendships I am forming will be beneficial for me long term, during consolidation.  Also, you don't need to stress about getting the surgery done right away, if you can afford the time, go have fun, and get the most out of your $1000 one way plane ticket lol Cost of living is cheap, so go live it up.  I spent 1000 usd just on entertainment the first month, and that 1000 went a lot farther than it ever would have in the US.
Pollution is terrible in Delhi, you don't want a weaken immune system before a surgery like this, when you can easily do something about it.   Seriously, buy an air purifier off amazon.in once you get more settled (I can send you the model number, it is good and works good)  as well has 3M protective masks for riding in taxi, Ubers, and Tuk Tuks.  At the very least buy those protective masks.  You can get 20 disposable masks for 8.00usd on amazon.in Pack one in your carry on if you plan on coming to Delhi. I  don't advocate packing much before  you come,  except the 3M pollution mask.

Finding living quarters to do lengthening: An arduous process?
« Reply #13 on: February 28, 2016, 04:42:15 PM »

I won't advocate for any specific doctors, but I will advocate for where to Lengthen and do consolidation.  Phoenix, from the forum, and I have found an awesome house to lengthen and consolidate in.  My goal is to get this place as a common lengthening spot of CLL patients for different doctors around Delhi.  I consulted with different doctors in Delhi; now I am reaching out to them, and explaining the benefits of lengthening where I am staying, and giving them my land lord's information to them.   The reason is so foreigners will have a cheap, fully serviced apartment, with a lift, to do Limb Lengthening in, as well as meet fellow limb lengthening patients, and share the experience of limb lengthening together.  If you ever plan on coming to Delhi to Lengthen, just let me know, and I will put you in contact with the land lord even if it is more than 5 or more years from the day of this post.

The benefits for Limb Lengthening patients living here:

1) The landlord of the apartment complex, ironically for LL patients, is a doctor and lives on the ground floor.
The benefits of him being a doctor is that if you need a prescription filled he can fill them, and don't even need to go to the pharmacy, they just get delivered to your door.  When you need your pin sites cleaned, and new bandages put on he can do that, because the apartment complex is also conveniently a family medicine hospital.  So he has a nurse, and physio therapists who can do that kind of stuff.  As well as having the ability to order medical equipment.  I asked him to order me a piece of equipment that would make keeping my legs straight, and elevated at night more comfortable.

2) The land lord rents out individual rooms, and has 3 floors with 4 rooms per flat, so that is 12 people, which are mostly foreigners and travelers, so I am literally meeting people from all over their world.  And definitely having a way better experience than if I was stuck in an expensive hotel room all by myself for the entire limb lengthening process.   8 people from south Korea just moved in to the Flat below mine, (5 of which are girls... WOOHOO) lol  My current room mate is a doctor from Spain, and an economist from Australia.  And a really tall girl from some country next to Russia that I can never pronounce, and that no one has ever heard of, so it would be pointless even saying it here haha.

3) When I need x-ray's done the apartment complex is conveniently located less than 1KM away, from a place that does x-rays, so I don't even have to go see the doctor at the hospital much during consolidation .  I can just send him x-rays, and if he needs to see me after he sees the x-rays then I will go to the hospital.  During my lengthening phase, however,  I will probably go every time he wants to see me.  Phoenix didn't even go see his doctor for 2 ½ months during consolidation.  Just did it this way.

4)Their is a small gym at the place.   It is not a good gym by American standards, but its a place to get some sort of work out, and a place to do physical therapy.  All exercise equipment works, you just have to do it.

5)The place has a lift, so it is fully wheel chair accessible.                                                                          6)  All of the services: A maid, a cook is available for breakfast (cost extra $2.00 usd lol), a 5 layer water filtration system, which is a better system than tap water in the US.  The place is ran like a hotel, so it has employees working here, so if there is ever any little small tasks, that need to be done, you can just ask.  Also, a laundry service, and the best part, is you don't even have to do your own dishes.  Actually, the best part is the cultural exchange probably.

7)  The location is pretty close to the hospital.  Roughly 30 minutes.  I initially wanted a place right next to the hospital, but phoenix said, he initially wanted that to, but that after living in both super close apartments, and medium close apartments he came to the conclusion that it didn't matter.  A thirty minute tax ride is not a problem.

8) There is a security guard; this guy isn't Mike Tyson in his prime, but at least you will always have someone to come unlock the 12 foot gate when you come home late after partying or something.  Also peace of mind.

The place is called Grand Sunset Condo's, and the total monthly cost in USD is around $363.00 which is a good deal even for indian standards, considering the services, and safety that is provided.  That is roughly the total cost, depending on which room you take,  not including meal services.

For me, finding my doctor was simple; I saw how phoenix's experience was with Dr. Dhawan, and that was good enough for me, but curiosity killed the cat, and this is what I learned consulting with other doctors.  Most doctors, ANY doctors from ANY country are salesman, and practice deception quite often, even if its self deception.  The doctors here will seem very salesy, but that is just because they are not good at sales.  If it is obvious that you are trying to push me into a direction, then you suck at sales.  Hence why there are posts on the forum that say that they have a hard time trusting indian doctors.   American doctors know how to do subtle sales where they explain things in great detail in the areas they want to lead you towards.  Its not like US doctors, don't lie.  They do but are just better at it.  So not trusting a doctors ability to treat you because he sucks at sales is not a good idea.  Indian doctors are technical, but do not show people how technical they are.  They just say: no problem, we can do it, and will say anything to not get you to worry, its part of the culture.   Don't let them control the dynamic.  Be assertive, ask why do you say that, or what from your experience is making you say X.  Why am I not believing you?  This last one will throw them off balance.  The point is to get them to talk.  And let them give you their standard pitch, which is why aggressive questioning is key.  To practice your consultation skill with doctors, on your first consultation, go see a doctor you have no interest in.  You will learn what to do better for the doctor you actually want to go see.

Just know what you want to do in terms of what procedure, and don't expect to get accurate information on what is or what is not the best procedure because every doctor says one style is better over another, except precise fit-bone, a lot of doctors seem to like that style, but don't use as much because patients are being priced out.  Have a list of questions to be able to pin the doctor down with them.  All of the doctors will seem busy thats because they are.  If you don't get the most out of each 15 minute consultation, then you are wasting your time; trust me, I know. I wasted my time on the first two consultations.   In America Hospitals give out pamphlets of information, so I was relying on that.  In Delhi it is not the case.  I don't care because it makes me more self reliant.  You have to do your own research, and come prepared for each consultation.  Doctors will also give you a price, just consider them like Verizon in the states, or any of the other major service providers world wide.  Service providers lead with a price but you should always expect to pay a little more; it is the same with doctors price quotes, because they don't add in the add ons, but I didn't care because I didn't expect any less, nor do I care about, paying a little more than what was advertised, because it is still super cheap.  One of my add ons was a 'pain pack'  so I was chilling out  fentanyl iv's for the entire stay of the hospital, was pretty fun lol I still only payed  10,500 USD for  CLL LON.  The extra $500 was because I, stupidly and knowingly transferred money through the banks.  The best way to transfer money is through bitcoin.  Total cost will be  5 cents.  Google how.

Once admitted to the hospital: preparations for comfort during & after hospital
« Reply #15 on: February 28, 2016, 04:48:37 PM »

First thing I did was have them change my bed mattress.  Mine was hard, and I wanted soft.  I didn't think they would do it but they did, and they put a small air mattress on top of it, so once I started to get bed sores, I just pressed a button and boom no more bed sores. Phoenix, from this forum, was my medical attendant for me while at the hospital, which made my experience awesome because sometimes it was hard to get workers or nurses to do things for me, but then phoenix would just translate for me, and boom it was done.  That's why I can't stress enough for foreigners to partner up with Indians to do limb lengthening together, and you make a good friend from a country that is a huge emerging market. Lol Could be a business partner one day.  The service at the hospital is outstanding.  My previous hospital was Stanford Medical Hospital, one of the top rated hospitals in the world, and the services in the hospital I used in Delhi was better; I can't speak for every hospital in Delhi, just my experience.

Side Note: Why is the service so good?  Since India has such a massive labor force, that work for low wages, businesses just have so many more employee than businesses in the US.  I have received far better service than the "luxury united states" so the hospitals services was amazing for an Americans standards, and expectations.

Food recommendations, while at the hospital, is to schedule a consultation with the dietician, and you guys will go over what you want to eat every day.  This is huge.  I told them to make soft food for the first two days.  Smoothie in the morning, blended vegetables bone broth stew for lunch.  Just take me on my word with this: when healing after a surgery drink raw juice, and it was only $1.50 usd for a 12 ounce freshly made raw juice.  I was drinking like 5 of them per day.  Another tip: is to set up your room to your liking.  I set up my ps4, moved around furniture, had them remove items that took up to much space, and set up all my electronics just how I wanted them so everything was charged, and easily accessible, remember you won't be able to move around much few days after surgery.  I turned it into my own little man cave.  DO THE SAME.  And remember to ask for forgiveness not permission.  Just do it.  You will probably be admitted to the hospital 1 or 2 days before surgery date.  You will not want to get up out of bed to take a crap, so my recommendation is the day before take laxatives early in the day, and at the same time have the doctor prescribe an enema during evening time.  This sounds funny, but it will be better to flush everything out, so you don't have to take the most painful crap of your life, the same or next day after your surgery.

Also, you are stuck in a hospital for 5 to 10 days, so take full advantage.  I did two consultations with eye doctors to get Lasek done in the future, bought a pair of glasses for the mean time, because the LCD tv was only a 37 inch, and I wanted to see the words on the TV screen, when I was playing my Ps4.  Total cost for prescription eye glasses, was only 26.00.  Check hospital information packet, and see what services the hospital provides.  Some people believe in alternative medications and some don't.  I can tell you that ayurvedic medicine gets somethings right.  Gas, bloating, and constipation medicines are 3 of them.  Schedule a consultations with a ayuverdic doctor, if you can, and have him prescribe those for you.  I had him schedule me something for my immune system, and Pain/swelling as well.  But at least get the stuff for gas, bloating, and constipation.  These will help combat the stomach problems from the antibiotics.  Take once you leave the hospital.  CRUCIAL INFORMATION: Bring the air purifier you bought when you first got to Delhi, and have it in the room while you are recovering post surgery.  Its a hospital, infections are prevalent. This may seem like overkill, but not doing it is not worth the risks, especially for foreigners in a foreign hospital.  Also, when in the hospital, where your 3M protective air mask.  This is the most crucial time to wear those.  The last thing you want to do is get sick pre/post surgery, so being smart, and taking precautions is a good thing.

How to Hack the pain: Jedi tricks to healthy pain management.
« Reply #16 on: February 28, 2016, 04:51:29 PM »

Doctors in India are stingy with opioids, and I am actually glad that they are because they are not super necessary.  While your at the hospital they will give you IV Fentanyl and India's version of  IV ibuprofen.  Basically, the hospital thinks that Fentanyl has less side affects.  My personal experience agrees because I haven't experienced any that I can tell.  Stay away from morphine.  With Fentanyl when you take a bunch you don't get high, just sleepy, or nauseous, which is what makes it less addictive.  You don't get the euphoric feeling just sleepy if you take to much.  Since they are stingy however, before you leave the hospital you will have to negotiate with the doctors to get them  to prescribe fentanyl (opioids) to you. Since they don't have much of a vested interest in the outcome, they will prescribe them to you, just be persistent, and don't quit asking until you get it.    Don't get the pill form, get it in the form of a patch.  Why? For two reasons: one is that taking any medications orally, depending on what it is can have a damaging effects to your stomachs small intestinal lining, as well as throw off the P.H. Levels in the stomach, and pain killers kills good bacteria.  Avoiding pills when necessary is a good idea. Two= you get micro-doses over the course of 72 hours instead of all at once, which is good because can't abuse it or take to much or to little.  Also, they will prescribe something similar to tylenol.  Get this in the patch form as well. Having a strong immune system, by having your stomach  functioning properly because of using patches instead of pills is a good idea.  Especially, after a major surgery.  Next, find some hashish, which is India's version of Chronic.  My strategy is to use it for physical therapy, and for sleep, since smoking anything right after a surgery is probably not the best.  BUT Once I start growing, I plan on switching from Hashish to melting regular weed down into coconut oil.  I say use coconut oil because it is surprisingly amazing for making hash oil with.  Once you are done you can just put the oil in the fridge, and then when you need medicine, it is easy just to cut off a chunk because the oil gets hard when cold.  Marijuana goes quite well with the fentanyl, so I have been getting great sleep, and low pain at least in terms of expectations.

My pain killers, while at the hospital:
IV fentanyl (opiods)
IV anti inflammatory
IV non opioid acute pain killer

My pain killers post surgery but before growing are:
fentanyl patches every three days.
A regular anti inflammatory patch.
3 to 4 small hits before physical therapy and sleep.

Pain killers once I start to grow.
A regular anti inflammatory patch every 24 hours as needed.
Coconut oil hash oil as needed. Or at night to secure restful sleep
Natural Ayurvedic pain killers+ anti inflammatory, as prescribed by Ayurvedic doctor.

I am choosing to stop the use of hashish, and Fentanyl once I start to grow.

I uploaded the images on the site you recommended, Turboimagehost.com, I will post the links shortly.

Dr. Dhawan does your typical setup.  4 wires at the knee with one rod, and 4 wires at the ankle with the rod.  The middle ring is a dummy ring, as he called it, just to be able to lengthen. I feel alright about the set up except that the two rods on the bottom rings bump into one another, and I really don't feel like that is good.  They are so long that they protrude, almost two inches past the frames, which makes it super annoying because they are constantly getting tangled with each other, and the opposites leg frames.  Anyone reading this post look at my pictures, and when you go to consult with a doctor makes sure that they use the appropriate sized rods.  I feel like this rod isn't the correct rod for my frames because I really don't see any benefit for having them so much longer than the frames. So why would an engineer design it like that?   I was looking at phoenix's frames, and it seems like they have cut his bottom rods so that they are flush with the frames.   I am thinking about cutting it myself with some bolt cutters, but something tells me that will be super painful lol I told Dr. Dhawan about it and he said to "deal with it, please."  Well since you said "please," I thought to myself, then sure. lol Do you know, KiloKhan, if this is common.  Having your rods stick out far past your frames?

This is good info. Any chance you can take a pic of your frames later? Curious about Dr Dhawan's frame set up when doing LON.

I'm not sure how common that is, although he's probably got a good reason for it. My rods stuck out far through the middle ring but only stuck out enough through the bottoms to be able to fit a single nut around it: http://www.turboimagehost.com/p/19317212/osteotomy_2.jpg.html

I appreciate this informative diary. I am in the process of finalizing a doctor for cosmetic surgery this summer. Dr. Dhawan and Dr. Parihar are my two potential candidates. If I choose Dr. Dhawan, I hope to stay in touch with you to help me on my journey. I am aiming for 8 cm, but I know he recommends 6 cm only. We will see how things go.

How to hack constipation, caused by antibiotics!!!!
« Reply #20 on: April 25, 2016, 06:34:37 PM »

Are my stomach issues part of the human condition? Is constipation part of being a human? Did human 500 years ago get bloated all the time? Do other animals have these stomach issues?

Seriously ponder these questions for a moment. Now think about them some more.

Why have, we as a global society accepted these notions, the notion of having our stomach and digestion impaired, as being a part of the human condition.  We take medicines made in a lab some where, who's goal as a company, is to sale more of there products to people; getting them to believe that they need this medicine now for the rest of their lives. Most medicines are a band aid. A band aid when stitches is required.

How come we have put our faith into these drug companies as a cure for our ailments. I will speak frankly now, it is due to laziness. We need to take our health into our hands by doing the appropriate research. Reading this article is a good first step, but there is much more reading that we can do. This article is intended to speedup the research process for you. Here is a list strategies that I have researched and experimented with myself personally after years of researching ways to correct my stomach woes.

The world is changing with free trade, and globalization is taking over and our food products are produced all over the world. What has not changed is our diets. We still want to eat the same healthy foods that our moms and grandmas used to make for us. The only difference is that these same foods are not the same as our grandmas used to make. Sure they may look the same on the outside, but on the inside they are far from the same. The United States, in all its glory, has exemplified the quintessence of capitalism. The problem of capitalism is that past a certain point the cons start to outweigh the pros. In the food production industry, in the US, capitalism has reached that tipping point. Ever wonder why America is one of the most obese countries in the world? It's because their main stream food has not been healthy like grandma's, for a long time, right around 50 years. American food production practices are starting to spread, so our knowledge of harmful foods must keep up with this “expansion of philosophy,”in terms of main stream food production. So now that you know a little as to why your stomach could be irritated, lets talk about simple strategies to get it back on track.

These strategies are for the short term. To get rid of your constipation, and get your digestion in order.

The Water Breakfast:
It is literally exactly what it sounds like. Have nothing but water for breakfast. That seem easy until I say how much. You should consume your daily supply of water, all eight glasses of it, equalling at least 64 ounces. Sit down and for however long it takes you drink 64oz of water. If you drink hot water it will be even better. I sit and make a meal out of it by heating up a big pot of water, and creating my own concoction. I mix herbal teas, ginger, honey, lemon peals, cinnamon, and/or whatever else you want to put with it. It does not matter really what you put into it. I put the things I listed because they are known to aid digestion, put whatever is going to get you to drink it. Remember, not to much sugar or sweeteners.

After the water breakfast, if you haven't produced a bowl movement, the next one should.

Eat raw, with no fats:
Eat a completely raw leafy green salad with raw vegetables after your water breakfast. I don't know what it is, but for whatever reason this works really well for me. A scientist would tell you it is because our stomach sends signals to the brain when an adequate amount of our nutrient levels are met.  Our brain then tells our digestive track that we have new and improved food, so out with the old.  If are nutrient levels are not reached then our brains tells our bodies to hold on to the food, as a natural surviving technique; that is why foods that are hard to digest, and have a low nutritional value are so hard to digest.  Go eat a McDonald's cheese burger in the US, and you will know what I am talking about.

Do not eat the salad until 2 to  3 hours after you consumed that water. We have good bacteria in our stomach that produces the necessary acid required to break down the food. If you try to stuff food on top of water, your food will not break down correctly, because the the bacteria will be to diluted. (Remember that for when you drink ice water with your dinner. Usually a small amount of Hot water with a meal is better for digestive purposes.) I am not suggesting that fats are bad for you. I believe the exact opposite actually. I believe healthy fats are really good and that is why sometime they can be exactly what we need to be healthy, just not when we are trying to fix our digestion and/or our irritable bowel syndrome. Make sense? Good. Next...

Skip a meal:
For whatever reason some people have began to form the opinion that skipping a meal is really bad for us; that eating unhealthy food is healthier than eating nothing at all. Nothing could be farther from the truth. As a species we were built for intermittent fasting, we actually can think at higher levels, if done properly.   Did you know that some US presidents do not eat at all the day they give the State of the Union address?   Imagine one hundred thousand years ago, people did not have grocery stores, so intermittent faster was just a way of life.  I just ordered off Zomato, and had them bring me a raw juice while writing this blog post, something tells me that wasn't around back then.  Delivery was not an option, so human ate what was literally in their immediate proximity.  Since we are a species that evolves to our environments to maximize our “level of fitness.” (Level of fitness, is a scientific term to describe the strong bodied) If the theory holds true, then humans would have evolved to have intermittent fasting serve us in some way. Whether that is to increase intelligence or strength, with the ultimate goal of increasing the chance of our off spring's survival. The point is is that skipping a meal is not going to kill you and may have some other benefits besides helping you fix your irritable bowl syndrome, and constipation.

I believe that if you are going to skip a meal it is better to skip dinner, but it really depends on your personal schedule.  If your schedule is not an issue, then, it depends on what is inside your stomach currently as to whether you should skip a meal for lunch or for dinner. If you had high fats, breads, and legumes the night before then skip lunch to allow extra time for food to break down because those foods takes longer to digest.

Don't eat different food types in the same meal:

I know this could be hard for some people to consider, but that is whyI am only saying to keep an open mind, just for a few days about it. SO lets define what I mean when I say food types; they include proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. I mentioned earlier that our body has different types of healthy bacteria in the stomach. Well our stomachs are smarter than we give it credit it for, because it knows what food type we put into our stomach. If we put proteins, our stomachs starts producing the necessary chemicals to digest protein.  If we put in starches it knows we put in starches. Same goes with fats. The problem is, is that when we put in two at the same time there is a cancellation that takes places, so the food just sits in our stomachs, and gets past into our small intestines partially digested. Since our digestion is slowed we begin to form gas due to the fermentation process that takes place inside our stomachs.  When food sits in a heated area, like a stomach, it produces gases, and the dreaded and pain acetic acid is produced, which gives us indigestion, heart burn, and acid reflux. This is basic chemistry 101.

There who is so much more a person could write about proper dieting practices, but these are specifically the strategies that work best for me while trying to produce a bowl movement and relieve constipation. Relieving constipation is the first step in order to get back track, and heal our stomachs. So why is a physical therapist telling me about ways to heal my stomach. Its simple. The body is a complete system. If our stomachs are out of balance then our stomachs become inflamed. When our stomachs become inflamed  our immune systems are on high alert and working in over drive to heal that part of the body, then the immune system is not able to focus and fix another part of the body; the part of the body that we are coming in to the physical therapy clinic in the first place.  My job, as the physical therapists, is to make sure I perform proper physical therapy on your body, and your job is to make sure you heal your stomach and get your stomach's chemistry back to a state of homeostasis. Combined together our efforts will get the best physical therapy possible.

Well I believe I am some where around 7cm done.  I am happy with the method that I am doing because I think with this method you can lengthen the longest with out doing a bunch of extra  surgeries.  With LON the bone consolidates at a slower rate because the rod slows that process down, so that means that a person can easily keep up with stretching to avoid the baleria foot because instead of lengthening a full 1mm a day you can just do .75 or . 50 even (when you are towards the end of your goal) that way your nerves can get used to the stretching when you have lengthened such extreme amounts.  Its common sense really.  When you  have lengthening 7cm you probably shouldn't still be lengthening at the 1mm per day rate any more.  AND you may not have to get that stupid achilles heal surgery, which I do not want to get for any reason.  I don't care if it is suppose to make you recover faster.  Even American doctors F-that surgery up.

ATTENTION PROSPECTIVE LIMB LENGTHENING PATIENTS:

Do not lengthen in India, I repeat do not lengthen in India.  Okay I have gotten my disclaimer out of the way now let me tell you why.  This does not apply to native Indians, you should get lengthened in India, but if you are a foreigner think twice.

1) India is like one big giant family, if you are an Indian you are part of that family.  If you are not Indian you are not apart of that family.  Therefore, Indian doctors won't treat you the same, and will literally care about you less.  And charge you more for the same service.  It is not like the states where their are people from all over the world so people are used to adversity.  NO NO NO here if you are a foreigner you stick out like a sore thumb, and people literally stare at you.

2) You will be charge more for almost everything, so the cost savings isn't that great.

3) lower you goals because you should not trust Indian doctors to handle complications.  It is not that they are not knowledgeable it is that you literally should not trust Indian doctors because they lie constantly and will never give you the truth well they will only when it benefits them to do so.  It is part of the culture here in India, people just lie.  Not only to just foreigners but local citizens here are sufferers of this as well.  Indians can't be trusted, it is a simple as that.  Sorry if this hurts anyone's feelings, but I have never been lied to so much in my entire life since I got here.  And trust me you do not want to be in a situation where you are worried whether or not your doctor is telling the truth.  I am not saying that it is something that is somehow in Indian's blood that is why they lie.  It is a cultural phenomenon.  I just moved from mountain View, California where their are more Indians than any where in the entire United States because that is where all the major IT and software companies are, Google, Facebook, IBM, Yahoo, Amazon etc. So their are more Indians living their then white people.  And I had plenty of Indian friends and I trusted them completely.  It was only until I moved to Delhi where I gained mistrust towards Indians, that is because it is part of the culture here in Delhi.  The US capital is not much better either though, worse exactly being rated the murder capital a few years in a row.  So I am not some hill billy red neck hating on other races just to hate.  I am just talking facts.  You should set your goals to 6.5 cm MAX.

4) Indian doctors are not like western doctors so they will not like you because you will have higher expectations for care than they are used to giving.

Do you suffer complications now?

I don't know because I do not trust what most people say here.  I do not know how to read a x-ray's.  What I do know is that one leg is somehow longer than the other, so I have to lengthen to catch that leg up with the other one.  And I have that knee pain everyone is talking about, and I am developing Ballerina foot, but I am unconcerned about that Ballerina foot because it is easy just to stretch everyday, and it goes away.  Right now I am in to much pain to stretch it, so I have to take rest for a couple of days, and resume walking on it again.  I still walk on it but just a lot less.  I still do physio therapy twice a day.  I use Portea.com and a physio therapists comes to my house.  I also live at a physio therapy clinic, so I pay her to give me physio therapy with her machines when ever the pain is really bad.  I am just starting to get them, so I have stopped lengthening.  That was always my intentions, just go until my body starts to get them and then stop.  I also live right next to a spa, so if you ever want a massage then you can get one for an hour for like $15.00 usd.  That is one of the good things about india.  Cheap everything.

I am really sorry for you OregonMade, I hope you are doing well now.

I could understand you have gone through some difficult times in India.I think its quite common for foreigners to get ripped off in India, (especially by some lower class uneducated people) if you are not accompanied by an Indian friend. My foreign friends have experienced much worse situations than you. I would suggest you only use internet to buy stuff and services(you will definitely get better deals than what you get offline).

w.r.t to treatment I think you are paying same price as Indians pay, as I already consulted with all the LL doctors in Delhi.Dr. Dhawan charges approx. same price to Indians as well (10,000 usd based on your previous posts).Even Dr. Sarin charges same price to both Indians and foreigners for surgery.

I am not sure how your doctors are treating and caring you, but please don't expect hospitality and caring like in USA.doctors in India needs to treat a lot of patients per day due to the poor doctor-patient ratio in India.they cannot concentrate wholly on a single or a group of patients(unless you are filling their pockets with chunks of $$$).if you feel your doctors are lying,I think you should strongly consider taking second opinion from doctors in USA(probably by sending your scanned medical reports to the doctor) as LL is a complicated process, it can leave you with serious ailments.

Well it is COMPLICATIONS TIME FOR OREGONMADE! Oh yeah bring it on! The pain that is.. lol Wow, so now I know what these complications feel like.  I have read and read and read about them, but now it is finally my turn to experience them, and holy fking   they suck.

The first one, which I am not sure if it is really a complication or not, is the alignment of the rod inside my bone.  I think it looks crooked, but my physio therapist thinks it will be ok because bone is starting to grow and make the alignment look better.  I am having crazy shin pains in my shins when I try to stretch my calves or when I stand at all.  I can not stand anyone more.  I can no longer straighten my right leg.  The knee bend issue.  Plus I got massive swelling in both legs, with yellow puss coming out, so it could mean infection.  Last time this happened, with the swelling issue, I laid on my belly with my legs tilted up, and eventually it went away.  I don't know how it just did lol In my right leg I thing I got an inflamed ligament, just because of the symptoms, and in my left leg my muscles are so effing tight that its nuts.  I woke up today, and OMFG so much pain.  I can no longer do much of anything.  I have to order all my food because no more cooking.  I went from cooking my own food everyday to ordering out every meal, even small things like juice lol haha

If anyone has any advice for me please let me know.  I have stopped lengthening and now I only lengthen my left leg slowly in order to catch it up to my right.  Does anyone know what the bone looks like on an x-ray when it is time to stop lengthening.? How much white is filled in ? Do you have a picture ?

Also, Oregonmade and Phoenix ( another guy from the forum) found this bad ass software that is free to down load for all you would be limb lengtheners.  I am going to use it to get my legs straight.  Any ways it is what Stanford Medical Hospital uses, so its high quality software for measuring your legs accurately.

I will load up pictures of my X-Rays and I would like to hear what people thought of them.
