i calculated the average height in different countries
« on: February 11, 2016, 05:51:24 PM »

Last week, i took one hour of my time to calculate the average height on a big dating website in a a few european countries, i only considered white young men, but to be honest, there are not much differences between non white men included or not included.
This is what i have found:
-Spain:177.5 cm
-Ireland/France/UK/Switzerland : 179 cm
-Belgium/Austria:180 cm
-Germany/Norway :181-182 cm
-Denmark/Sweden:182 cm
-The netherlands:184 cm

for each of those countries, i had large samples (10 000 to 100 000 profiles).
However many men lie, so i compared those results with official and reliable datas:
In switzerland, the average height for conscripts is 178 cm, and i found 179 cm.
In Norway and denmark, the average height for conscripts is like 180-180.5 cm , and i found 181.5 cm

So those results are pretty close to real figures, in fact,  we just have to remove 1 cm, or 1.5 cm at most,  and you find the the same results as the offcial ones.

It just shows 2 things: the average height in central and nothern europe (except the netherlands) is not above 183 cm.
Southern europeans are not tiny.

So What do you think? If you live in one of those country, tell me if you think the results are accurate biased.
In my opinion, living in France and having no datas since 2000 , i would say that it's pretty accurate

Why did you do this? The wikipedia sources are way more acurate, since they really measured the people and used large samples.
Your numbers are probably not far of. Austrians are probably around 180, I didn't get the impression that germans are taller though. I've been there very often and they never appeard to be noticably taller.

because many countries do not have reliable and recent datas, for example: France and Belgium.
German are just a bit taller, it might not be noticeable, but it also depends on the region, i guess that nothern germans are taller than southern germans, i don't know where you have been
I don't think wikipedia sources are more accurate, samples are often too small, only studies which rely on conscription are valuable.
I have just shown that we could use dating website, as long as there are enough profiles.
For France and UK, i had up to 100 000 profiles, just for 20-27 years old men.
And i also wanted to confront my feelings, with real datas, and considering i didn't find any recent datas for France, i decided to make a study

Dating websites are very unreliable when compiling male heights considering how much they lie about it. If a guy says he's 180 cm on a dating site he's more likely 175 - 178 cm in reality.

This is too. And its unfortunate because, due to height inflation ,women are raising their standards and not evening trusting what we list our heights as once you get below 5'10"/5'11". LOL I say 5'9" even though I'm really 5'8". Not a HUGE difference, and only women around my height would know, but for petite women, I can get away with it (I have many times - used to say I was 5'7" when I was 5'5").

I think its normal to ''round'' your height in online dating sites but within reasonable boundaries. For example, I am now 175.5, if I do 7.5 and become 183 (6 f) I might list online that I am 185 (6'1) because I would go to the date with formal shoes that are around an inch. I think it also makes sense to inflate 1 inch because if everybody does it, women's perception is adjuted accordingly and if you list your true height of , for example my current one of 5'9, it would be assumed I am 5'8.
