Surgical items left inside patient

I've read that in all types of surgeries, mistakes can happen and things can be left inside patients during invasive surgery. Apparently it happens more than people admit. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK133403/
Has anybody ever heard of surgical gauze being forgotten inside the legs after surgery? Is it dangerous?

I wouldn't go to a surgeon who's done this even once.
